Seven new species of spiders were discovered, named after Harry Potter, the GoT character
Seven new spider species discovered by scientists from Instituto Butantan, Sao Paulo in Brazil have been named after characters from cult literary works like Harry Potter and Game of Thrones.
Scientists were inspired by the famous works: The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, HP Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu, Charlotte's Web and Little Miss Spider to name the six-eyed spider, discovered in a small cave in northern Brazil.
The other two new species are named Lord Varys, the characters of Game of Thrones and Aragog characters in Harry Potter, all of which belong to the same genus Neotropical Oichrocera.
Although all seven species of spiders live in the dark, underground, none of them have the same characteristics as those living in caves, such as loss of pigmentation, lack of eyes. often blind. They are classified as edaphic troglophile species, capable of completing life cycles without sunlight, but are not entirely dependent on darkness. They often crawl near the surface and can be detected outside the cave.
To describe the species, scientists collected about 2,000 biological samples after a series of 5-year field trips.
Not only that, there is a spider named after Ochyrocera laracna, the famous giant Laracna spider (Shelob in English) that attacks the main characters Frodo and Sam on their way to Mordor in part 2 of Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers.
In addition, it is doubtful that the name Ochyrocera atlachnacha refers to the Atlach-Nacha magic spider from the universe created by HP Lovecraft. Atlach-Nacha is a giant spider with a human-like face that lives in caves under a mountain and is said to link the world to the Dreamlands.
This is not the first time that species in the animal world are named after famous people or characters.
Previously, a strange spider, a brown spotted fish, a parasitic worm, an extinct lizard and a reef fish were named after former US President Barack Obama, many Newly discovered spiders also named David Attenborough, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Bernie Sanders and a new moth named after Donald Trump.
