Microsoft has announced the end of support for .NET 7
Specifically, in a blog post today, Microsoft said the official support package for .NET 7 will end after May 14, 2024. Thus, from the time of launch until its death, .NET 7 will be supported with continuous updates for 18 months. Microsoft is still applying the standard Term Support (STS) policy of one and a half years for odd-numbered versions of the .NET open source development platform.
Microsoft notes that May 14 is also when the company's monthly event called Patch Tuesday takes place. Therefore, .NET 7 may receive a final update on this date.
Here's what happens to apps built with .NET 7 after May 14:
- Apps using this version can continue to function.
- No new security updates will be released for .NET 7.
- Continuing to use an unsupported version will expose you to security vulnerabilities.
- You may not be able to access technical support for .NET 7 applications.
Additionally, Microsoft said the .NET 7 component in Visual Studio will be deprecated, and optional for Visual Studio 2022 17.6 and Visual Studio 2022 17.4 with the June 2024 servicing updates for these versions.
Microsoft recommends that users using an application created with .NET 7 check with the developer to see if there is an upcoming version of the application based on the newer .NET 8 platform.
NET 8, officially launched in November 2023, is the . NET and is expected to be supported until November 2026. Microsoft says TechEmpower Benchmarks show that in the JSON and Fortunes API, .NET 8 performance increases by 18% and 24%, respectively. compared to .NET 7. Since this is a platform developed by Microsoft, the company can fully promote the use of .NET 8 for AI-based applications.
