Microsoft caught training AI Gaming Copilot with user gaming data

A user discovered that Microsoft is using screenshots and gameplay data from Windows 11 to train the AI Gaming Copilot. This feature is enabled by default, unless the user disables it.

A user on the ResetEra forum recently discovered that Microsoft's AI Gaming Copilot – a tool that comes pre-installed on Windows 11 computers – is sending screenshots and data about the games you play back to Microsoft's servers. This data is used to train the company's AI models. What's more, this option is enabled by default, meaning Microsoft is quietly using your gaming time to train the AI, unless you manually turn it off.

Wccftech confirmed that when you go to Game Bar > Settings > Privacy Settings , the ' Model training on text ' option under Gaming Copilot is enabled. Their reporter also found this setting active on his personal laptop – before immediately disabling it.

In addition, Gaming Copilot also has options to allow AI to collect data from voice conversations when users play games, but this feature is not enabled by default. The system also saves personalized data, cache, and all conversations between users and Gaming Copilot, if you use this tool.

Users can completely turn off all of these data collection options by going to:
Game Bar → Gaming Copilot → gear icon (Settings) → Privacy settings , then turning off the relevant options. This helps you actively control your personal data, instead of being automatically participating in Microsoft's 'AI training' process.

Microsoft seems to be letting gamers down more than ever lately. The Xbox Series console price in the US has increased for the second time this year, along with higher dev kit fees – making it more expensive for game developers. And on top of that, the Xbox Game Pass subscription price has increased by 50%, while incentives and rewards have been cut.

And now, Microsoft's secret use of user gaming data to train AI has further tarnished the company's image in the eyes of gamers. Perhaps this is not too surprising for a company that just laid off more than 9,000 employees to focus on investing in artificial intelligence.
