According to the latest report from Counterpoint Research, Apple took the number 1 position in global smartphone market share for the first time in the first quarter of 2025, reaching 19%. This success was achieved thanks to the presence of the mid-range iPhone 16e model.
The report also said that Apple's expansion strategy in emerging markets and double-digit growth in India, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and Japan helped it take the top spot. The global smartphone market maintained steady growth in the first quarter of 2025, increasing by 3% year-on-year.
The decline in developed markets was offset by strong subsidized demand in China and a recovery in Latin America, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. "January 2025 sales were particularly strong, driven by subsidies in China. The momentum continued with launches such as Samsung's Galaxy S25 and Apple's iPhone 16e," said Ankit Malhotra, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research.
However, the report also warned that global smartphone market share is expected to decline throughout 2025 despite first-quarter growth, mainly due to new US tariffs and escalating trade tensions between the world's two largest economies - the US and China.
Samsung followed Apple in second place (18% market share). Despite a slow start, the Korean manufacturer has recovered strongly thanks to the Galaxy S25 series and A-series phones. Sales of the Galaxy S25 Ultra also recorded a significant increase.
Chinese brands such as Xiaomi and Vivo continued to grow steadily, taking third and fourth place respectively. OPPO ranked fifth, while Huawei - China's largest manufacturer in Q1/2025 - also recorded global growth.
it seems that apple's growth in the region of the world's largest smartphone market (asia) has shown signs of slowing down in the past few years. in fact, reports show that its business performance is declining in some countries in the region.
the two major manufacturers have maintained their first place in the us market statistics in the last two years. latest results show that apple accounted for 42% market share in the us, a significant increase compared to 35% of the fourth quarter of 2012. samsung also grew from 22% in the fourth quarter of 2012 to 26% in the fourth quarter of 2013.
windows phone market share is still far behind the two big ios and android. but although accounting for only 3.6% of the global smartphone market share in the third quarter of 2013, it can be said that windows phone is still considered to have a relatively fast growth rate compared to the previous period.
on its developer support page, apple published a statistical result based on the number of iphones accessing the app store. accordingly, apple said that there are currently 52% of iphones accessing the app store recently updated to ios 8.
according to the latest survey of market research firm adduplex, ending on 26.5, the market share of windows phone 8.1 users accounts for about 5% market share of global windows phone users.
the good news for the apple believers is that apple will soon organize a program to buy old iphones in vietnam after the company has bought back the old iphone in countries like the us, uk and india.
