How to save battery on PS4 gaming controllers
Playstation 4 has sold over 100 million copies and for good reason. It boasts a truly impressive library of games, making gamers around the world spend hours in a virtual world. At least they can do so when the handle is charged.
Unfortunately, the DualShock 4 controller has extremely poor battery life. For some reason, Sony decided to only include a 1,000 mAh battery in the PS4 controller. To make it easy to imagine, an AA battery has twice as much capacity as the battery of this handle. The Internet is full of people complaining about the short battery life of the DualShock 4 controller. Fortunately, there are a few tips to help you make the most of the battery life from the DualShock 4 gaming controller.
How to extend battery life on PS4 gaming controller?
- Change the time to turn off the handle
- Blur the light bar
- Reduce the speaker volume of the handle
- Turn off the vibration effect
- Never worry about battery life again
Change the time to turn off the handle
When you're using your PS4 console for anything other than playing games, like watching Netflix or YouTube, the DualShock 4 controller is still on. By default, the DualShock 4 controller is set to power off after 60 minutes. To save battery power for the handle, you can ask it to turn off automatically before that time.
You can adjust the auto-off time of the handle in one of two ways. First, go to the PS4's Settings menu and select Devices> Controllers . Here, you will see various options including 'Set Time Until Controllers Turn Off' . To adjust battery life, select the lowest setting, 10 minutes. Another way to do this is to open the PS4 Quick Menu by pressing and holding the PS button on the DualShock 4 controller and selecting Sound / Devices.
Blur the light bar
DualShock 4 has a strip of light bar on the front that changes colors in certain games. The light bar not only looks good and has a practical purpose behind it. The light bar works in conjunction with the PS Camera hardware add-on. The camera monitors the movement of the handle through the light bar when playing PSVR games. Also, it does not serve many purposes. Unfortunately, leaving the light on will contribute to draining the battery and there's no way to turn it off completely. However, the light bar can be dimmed to minimize the amount of power consumed.
Access the Quick Menu PS4 by pressing and holding the PS button on the controller. From there, select Sound / Devices, then select Brightness of DualShock 4 Light Bar. By default, this mode is set to Bright. However, changing it to Dim will give you a bit more battery life. Alternatively, you can access this option by going to Settings> Devices> Controllers .
Reduce the speaker volume of the handle
The DualShock 4 controller has a small built-in speaker. While the main game music and sound comes from the TV or stereo system, the speakers on DualShock 4 are used by some games to provide novel sound effects. Speakers of the controller are often used as a way to help players immerse themselves into the gaming world.
The most interesting point is that the speaker on the handle is much louder than it really is. And the louder the volume, the more power is needed. To reduce the volume of the handle, open the Quick Menu by pressing the PS button on the handle. Select Devices, then click Volume Control (Speaker for Controller) . Here you can switch to a lower volume level that is right for you to save a little battery. Alternatively, you can also change the speaker volume of the handle by navigating to Settings> Devices> Controllers .
Turn off the vibration effect
As its name implies, the DualShock 4 handle contains an engine that delivers powerful vibration effects. Unfortunately, these vibrations drain the battery from the handle. Fortunately, you can completely turn off the vibration of DualShock 4.
Unfortunately, you cannot turn off the vibration effect by pressing and holding the PS button on the handle to open the Quick Menu. Instead, you will have to go to Settings> Devices> Controllers . From there, scroll down to the option labeled 'Enable Vibration' . Pressing the X button clears the checkmark from the box and disables the vibration of the DualShock 4 controller.
Never worry about battery life again
While you'll always have to charge your DualShock 4 controller, there are utilities that will help prevent interruptions during gaming. First, you should buy a charging station for the DualShock 4 gaming controller. They are very affordable and easy to use. Simply turn the handle on the charging station after several sessions to ensure the battery is always fully charged.
If you don't want to invest in a charging station or think you really need to use it, use an extra-long micro USB cable. This way, you can charge your controller while sitting comfortably in a chair, without interrupting gaming. If you really don't like the idea of a cord, you can choose an external battery pack for DualShock 4. There are a few different types on the market, but Venom's external battery is an officially licensed product.
