Bagger 288 excavator was built by German company Krupp in 1978. It is 220m long, 96m high (taller than the Statue of Liberty) and weighs 13,500 tons (heavier than the Eiffel Tower and equivalent to about 293 meters) a super tank T90 (about 46 tons), Bagger 288 has become the largest self-propelled crawler machine in the world.

Bagger 288 is an order from the mining company Rheinbraun. It took engineers five years to plan the design and production, and the time to assemble this giant machine took another 5 years.

Because it is quite bulky and very heavy, although equipped with a large capacity engine, Bagger has a maximum speed of 10m / min to ensure safety. This speed lags far behind other giant machines.

Bagger 288 works in open mines. This excavator uses 18 rotating buckets as a continuous shovel to dig stones. It can move 240,000 cubic meters of rock every day. This huge machine only needs 3-4 workers to be able to collect 265,000 tons of fuel a day.

Disassembling the machine and transporting parts was difficult due to the expensive cost, so Bagger 288 has only had to move from one mine to another in 2001.
