Chinese magician sells SSD 1080 Pro at super cheap price even though Samsung hasn't launched it yet
A series of fake SSDs called Samsung 1080 PRO advertised with speeds of up to 15.8 GB/s have appeared widely on Chinese retail stores. But they are clearly fake because Samsung has never released the next version of the 990 Pro.
These scammers like to clone Samsung SSDs and then give them a new model name to fool users.
The fake Samsung 1080 Pro SSD costs about $30, much cheaper than the regular Samsung 990 Pro drive.
A store called Quasarzone decided to order and test the Samsung 1080 Pro SSD. According to the advertisement, the drive capacity is 4TB, maximum speed is 15,800 MB/s, a surprising number because the speed of the fastest Gen5 SSD today using the fastest Phison E26 memory chip is 14.6 GB/s. S.
The Samsung 1080 PRO SSD comes in a plastic case, the label sticker has a misleading font and overall quality. In terms of appearance, it looks quite similar to Samsung's 980 PRO drive, but the PCB configuration says otherwise. SSDs have a single NAND memory chip.
In testing, Windows Disk Management showed a 4TB drive on board.
But with MediaTester, an application used to detect fake hard drives, the Samsung 1080 PRO SSD failed, unable to pass.
Analyzing the drive on CrystalDiskInfo shows that the SSD only supports PCIe 3.0 x4 less than the 980 PRO. Other tests show that the Samsung 1080 SSD has read and write speeds up to 12 times and 59 times lower than the Samsung 980 PRO, respectively.
