ARCore finished beta phase, looking for Lens image to launch on more Android devices

Product manager at Google Lens Aparna Chennapragada describes them as two sides of a coin.

Google ARCore's augmented reality system has gone through the beta phase with new features. In addition, Lens visual search tool will become part of Google Photos on all phones.

Yesterday, ARCore 1.0 launched on all Google Pixel phones, all Samsung flagship smartphones, Android O version of LG V30 and V30 Plus, Asus ZemFone AR and OnePlus 5.

Besides the features from the Preview, ARCore 1.0 will support creating virtual objects anchor points on textured surfaces, not just smooth surface. Google said there are currently more than 100 million Android devices supporting this platform and they are also working with a number of companies (Samsung, Huawei, LGE, Motorola, Asus, Xiaomi, HMD / Nokia, ZTE, Sony Mobile and Vivo ) to have more phones that support ARCore.

Lens was only available in Pixel before, but it can now be used via Google Photos on Android and iOS 9 and above, or via Google Assistant on some high-end Android phones. Lens also improves the ability to identify common animal and plant species. Not only can the images taken with Photos be processed, if using Assistant on high-end segmented phones of Samsung, Huawei, LG, Motorola, Sony or HMD / Nokia, you just need to open the phone and raise the front camera things to find.

Lens helps to search by visual image

ARCore released a limited preview from August 2017 and Lens later appeared in October. Product Manager at Google Lens Aparna Chennapragada described them as two sides of a coin. Lens is a 'camera-in' system that helps you understand the visual world and ARCore is a 'camera-out' system to open another world on the phone. Lens is an extension of Google's text and voice search, and ARCore allows developers to easily build Apple's AR self-contained ARKit applications for iOS. ARKit supports adding vertical planes and recognizing images so Google can help these two mobile AR platforms catch up with each other.

Long-term visibility for ARCore and Lens is quite interesting. According to Chennapragada, Google can easily connect 'camera-in' and 'camera'out' of Android. For example, when you see a piece of furniture, take pictures for Google to recognize and automatically create 3D models. According to Chennapragada, the application when combining these two tools can be extended to both Google VR180 point-and-shoot cameras to identify objects.

Currently, both Lens and ARCore are still simple and limited, but in just a few weeks we will find them much more complicated and popular.
