The Hellenistic Period 2,000-year-old ancient toy was discovered inside the children's tomb in the ancient seaport city of Parion located in the northwestern province of Canakkale in Turkey.
Researchers have discovered toys and other products during excavation at an ancient archaeological site, Professor Hasan Kasaoğlu from Atatürk University, who excavated at Parion, told Anadolu Agency.
He notes that toys have been used as "gifts for dead children" and it provides important information about the particular sociological structure of the old era in this locality.
For example, Kasaoğlu emphasizes that small female statues are found in the tombs of girls, while male statues are found in the tombs of boys.
"2,000 years ago, girls playing dolls" are like Barbie dolls, "Kasaoğlu said, although the objects changed their shape and features a bit".
Besides figurines about humans, statues of legendary animals are also found in the tombs, believed to be buried with the purpose of accompanying their children on their journey to the afterlife.
Earlier this month, researchers discovered a bottle of milk for ancient babies near the area.
Before that, Parion, also known as Parium, was an ancient Greek city founded in 709 BC. It had two major harbors in the Roman period, and served as the "main customs station" for rigorous shipping goods from Istanbul to the Aegean.
Archaeologists have conducted excavations in this ancient area since 2005. The morgues and graves, as well as ancient artifacts have been found in this area.
