This 5G smartphone runs Linux, has a physical keyboard and works like a laptop
The world of tiny Linux smartphones seems to be about to add a new member. Emerging technology company Planet Computers recently announced a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo with an interesting smartphone model running on Linux, and can function as a laptop.
This smartphone, called Astro Slide, looks relatively classic but has very modern equipment and features. It is equipped with 5G connectivity along with a small physical keyboard, which can turn into a laptop when needed.
In terms of hardware, Astro Slide comes with the essential equipment packages to ensure users can work efficiently and maneuver anytime and anywhere. At the heart of the device is the new generation 8-core SoC MediaTek Dimension 1000 that promises not bad performance, along with a built-in 5G chip, specially optimized for better signal transmission while 'visible' reduction in power consumption.
In addition, this smartphone comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (expandable with a microSD card). Interestingly, 'base' versions of Astro Slide will run on Android, but for those looking for more productivity, Planet Computers has a Linux-based version available. It is still not clear which Linux distribution this phone will use.
Of course, to evaluate the performance of a technology device will have to rely on actual tests. But if these statements are correct, Astro Slide's prospects for gaining a foothold in the market are very wide open, especially as 5G network expansion processes are being implemented in many countries with fast speed.
'Astro Slide is the first 5G smartphone to feature a physical keyboard and is the fastest 5G device ever published to date. Astro's revolutionary RockUp sliding hinge transforms a powerful 6.53 "touch screen smartphone into a mini laptop, with Planet Computers' tactile backlit keyboard."
A question that is also very concerned is the price of the device. According to information from Indiegogo website, Astro Slide will be sold at prices starting from 799 USD to 999 USD, but if you participate in a fundraising campaign, you will receive a discount to buy this phone for only 546 USD.
Astro Slide is expected to reach the first customers in March 2021. Please take a closer look at this unique handset.
