The new Snapdragon will be manufactured under 7nm process, support 5G
Qualcomm today confirmed the next Snapdragon processor for its high-end mobile device will be manufactured on the 7nm process, which supports a 5G modem. Although Qualcomm has yet to reveal the official name of the chip, it is most likely the Snapdragon 855.
The new generation of chips that has been switched to manufacturing on the advanced 7nm process is an important turning point for Qualcomm to increase its chip performance while reducing power consumption.
Qualcomm also announced details about its next generation of chipsets that will support the new 5G wireless data technology. However, Qualcomm's Modem X50 will be added as an optional accessory for 5G devices, not in the next generation of Snapdragon SoC. Because in 2019, 5G networks have not yet been able to operate in almost every corner of the world, not yet integrating the 5G modem will help manufacturers save costs.
Qualcomm will disclose detailed information about the next generation high-end mobile platform in the fourth quarter of 2018, when it launched the high-end chip for next year's flagship model.
It is unclear who Qualcomm will choose to produce the next generation of chipsets from the company, TSMC or Samsung Foundaries. But recently, some rumors suggest that Qualcomm will continue to trust the Taiwan-based company.
