Qualcomm has just introduced its second-generation 5G modem called Snapdragon X55, with some major improvements. This is considered the next generation for 5G modem, Snapdragon X50 series.
Compared to the X50, the Snapdragon X55 has a superior download speed, up to 7 Gbps (7 gigabit per second). Although technically, the X55's speed has increased by 40% compared to the X50, but when used in practice, users will not be able to recognize the difference by the influence of the existing band and interference.
In addition to the speed improvement, the Snapdragon X55 also has antenna support for the 5G band below 6 GHz for higher energy efficiency. X55 is also compatible with Qualcomm's new mmWave antenna module with a smaller size, which saves space for smartphones.
Not only can the X55 be used on smartphones, it is also suitable for many other devices, from a PC that is always connected to a car.
Qualcomm also said that the Snapdragon X55 has some other minor upgrades, most notably the ability to share 4G and 5G signals on the same band. This is extremely important because operators will continue to support 4G devices for a long time.
In addition, the X55 also supports three-way MIMO protocol that allows users to maintain a network connection whether traveling from one location to another and when moving up and down.
Qualcomm expects to bring the first X55 modems to manufacturing partners in the first half of this year and move to trade before 2020.
