The 32 million-year-old fossil tree is found in China
A group of scientists discovered a 32-million-year-old fossil of Dipteronia tree in Yunnan, Sichuan province.
This is the first time a fossil from the early Oligocene era has been found in East Asia, according to Xinhua.
Dipteronia, the early deciduous shrub was widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere during the Palaeogene period, but disappeared in North America from the early Oligocene period.
The Dipteronia fossils have been excavated in North America but are rarely found in Asia.
Scientists found that the Dipteronia fossil found in Yunnan is similar to North America, meaning that the flora in East Asia and North America is closely related 32 million years ago, according to Zhou Zhekun, one of the authors of the article and a researcher at Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences added.
