Sleep disorders increase the risk of Parkinson's in men
Do you often lack sleep and are in the habit of hitting or kicking while you sleep? Note, according to a study, this may be a sign of a disorder involving Parkinson's disease, especially in men.
Sleep disorder (also known as RBD), usually affects people 50-70 years old, and is more common in men than women, characterized by disorders in the sleep where dreams occur.
While healthy people are relaxing and still sleeping, people with RBD live in their dreams and during sleep they tend to hit, kick and scream unconsciously.
The study, published in The Lancet Neurology, shows that men with RBD lack dopamine - a chemical in the brain that affects emotions, movements and feelings of pleasure and pain may be showing signs. of a form of encephalitis.
Therefore, the risk of Parkinson's disease or dementia will be more likely because the nerve cell group in the brain that produces dopamine stops working.
Morten Gersel Stokholm, University of Aarhus, Denmark, said: "These patients have encephalitis in the area where dopamine-producing neurons are found '.
Previous researchers did not know that there is a form of encephalitis in these patients who is at risk of developing Parkinson's disease.
" These findings will be used to identify patients with sleep disorders who may develop Parkinson's disease and may also help develop drugs that can prevent or slow the development of the disease ."
In this study, patients with RBD in Spain and Denmark examined their brain changes, analyzed by Positron radiography (PET).
