Story and playable characters
The campaign begins with a young Bruce Wayne and follows the formation of his Gotham allies. The official roster centers on seven main playable characters:
| Character | Gameplay identity |
|---|---|
| Batman / Bruce Wayne | Combat, detective work, traversal, and a broad gadget set |
| Jim Gordon | Gotham ally with character-specific abilities |
| Robin | Uses a line launcher and Bat-Family gadgets |
| Nightwing | Fast staff-based combat |
| Batgirl | Hacking-focused tools including the Hackarang |
| Catwoman | Agile movement and whip-based abilities |
| Talia al Ghul | Connected to the League of Shadows storyline |
The villains include the Joker, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Ra's al Ghul, Bane, Two-Face, Firefly, and Mr. Freeze. The story is an original synthesis rather than a direct adaptation of one Batman film or comic.
What changed from earlier LEGO Batman games?
| Area | Legacy of the Dark Knight |
|---|---|
| World | Open-world Gotham with landmarks, rooftops, missions, challenges, and secrets |
| Combat | Combo-driven fighting, counters, gadgets, stealth, and character upgrades |
| Traversal | Grappling, gliding, Batmobiles, Batcycles, and other vehicles |
| Batcave | Displays suits, vehicles, trophies, case files, and customizable items |
| Difficulty | Includes higher settings for players who want more challenge |
| Co-op | Local shared/split-screen co-op; Steam also lists Remote Play Together |
The game keeps LEGO collection and puzzle elements but puts more weight on “being Batman” in Gotham than LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, which expanded across the wider DC universe.
Vehicles, suits, and collection
The base game includes a large suit collection, multiple Batmobiles and Batcycles, and Batcave props or trophies. Vehicle traversal is central to the open world rather than a small bonus level.
Account links, physical LEGO sets, pre-orders, and DLC can unlock additional cosmetic items. Check the exact platform listing before buying because some items require a separate account, subscription, edition, set purchase, or redemption code.
Standard versus Deluxe Edition
| Edition | Included content |
|---|---|
| Standard | Main game and its normal unlockable suits, vehicles, and Batcave content |
| Deluxe | Standard content plus the Legacy Collection and Mayhem Collection entitlements |
The Legacy Collection adds themed suits, vehicles, and Batcave items. The Mayhem Collection is scheduled for September 18, 2026 and includes a Mayhem Mode with the Joker and Harley Quinn as playable characters, a new story mission, seven suits, five Batcave items, and a Batmobile.
Warner Bros. Games' Switch 2 and Mayhem Collection announcement provides the current date and DLC details.
What to check before buying
- Use the Standard Edition if you mainly want the campaign and open-world Gotham; compare the Deluxe upgrade only if the announced add-ons matter to you.
- On PC, check Windows 11, 16 GB RAM, GPU memory, storage, and current performance reports.
- Buy the Switch 2 version only after confirming its September launch status and performance information.
- Choose the game for local co-op, not online multiplayer; Remote Play Together streams the local co-op experience on Steam.
- Review regional pricing, accessibility options, language support, and refund rules on the storefront you will actually use.
