Check storage and disk pressure

Storage problems have two different forms that are often confused. Capacity pressure means the system drive has little free space for updates, temporary files and application work. Activity pressure means the drive is fully busy serving reads and writes, even when capacity is available. A computer can suffer either condition or both. The practical focus is to measure each one, identify safe cleanup opportunities and recognize warning signs that require backup rather than cleanup.

Ask capacity, activity and health as separate questions

Capacity asks how much free space remains. Activity asks whether the drive is busy at the moment of the slowdown. Health asks whether Windows or the device reports reliability concerns. A nearly full drive can increase update and temporary-file problems, while 100 percent active time can appear on a drive with plenty of free space.

Microsoft's Storage settings documentation explains that Windows uses reserved storage, temporary files and cleanup tools to maintain update and system operation. A critical storage warning is a different condition that calls for backup and support.

Measure free space and active time

Open Settings > System > Storage and record used and free space on the system drive. Review categories without deleting anything. Then open Task Manager > Performance > Disk and observe active time, response time and transfer rate during the slow task. On Processes, sort by Disk to identify the workload.

A brief 100 percent spike during startup, update or file copy can be normal. Sustained high active time with low throughput and long response time may indicate a slow queue, paging, background maintenance or a storage issue. Do not infer hardware failure from active time alone.

Free space with a reviewable cleanup

Microsoft recommends Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations for temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files and unused apps. Each category should be reviewed because Windows.old and Downloads can contain data the user still needs.

Start with temporary files and Recycle Bin items you recognize. Review Downloads manually. Do not remove Windows.old if you still need the option to return to a previous Windows version. Cloud files marked online-only save local space but require connectivity and a working account.

Security scans, indexing and updates may finish on their own; a user application may need repair; persistent I/O errors or disconnects require a different path.

Drive optimization in Windows handles media appropriately; do not run third-party defragmenters on SSDs or repeatedly force repair scans. File-system repair and hardware-health checks should be guided by evidence and backup status.

Treat reliability warnings as a backup event

Windows can report critical warnings for some NVMe SSDs, including low spare capacity, degraded reliability or read-only state. Microsoft advises backing up data and contacting support. Windows does not monitor every SATA SSD or hard disk through this screen, so absence of a warning does not prove health.

Repeated read errors, disappearing volumes, clicking sounds, unexplained read-only behavior or a drive that disconnects under load should move the workflow from cleanup to data protection and hardware assessment.
