How to use Claude's Connectors feature to summarize emails.

After Claude launched the Connectors feature, many people decided to try it out to see if this AI chatbot could really help manage their chaotic inboxes, and thankfully, it worked.

People sometimes spend too much time figuring out which emails are most important. After Claude launched the open feature, many people decided to try this AI chatbot to see if it could really help manage their chaotic inboxes, and thankfully, it worked.

Claude can read and understand emails.

Claude introduced the Connectors feature in July 2025, marking a shift from a simple chat interface to a productivity hub. This feature allows you to connect Claude directly to dozens of external services, from email and calendar applications to payment processors and even design tools like Canva .

Note : The Connectors feature requires a paid Claude plan (Max, Team, Enterprise, or Pro); the free plan does not provide access to most connectors.

The connector establishes a secure bridge between Claude and Gmail . Once the two are connected, Claude can scan your emails and understand the context.

Many people think some API configuration is needed, but the setup is very easy; the whole process takes less than a minute. Here's how to integrate Gmail with Claude:

  1. Open Claude and navigate to Settings in the bottom left corner.
  2. Click on Connectors from the menu options.
  3. Scroll down and select Browse Connectors .
  4. Find Gmail in the list and click the + (plus) button.
  5. Click Continue and allow Claude access to your Gmail account.
  6. Grant the necessary permissions when Google's authentication system requests them.

Technically, it uses OAuth 2.0 for authentication; therefore, Claude never stores your password. Instead, it receives a temporary access token that you can revoke at any time through your Google account settings.

What's truly surprising is Claude's ability to understand email context, going far beyond simply reading the text. It recognizes conversational sequences, detects tracking patterns, and can distinguish between promotional emails and genuinely important messages.

The integration also works with other Google services . Similar to how Google Drive summarizes changes in documents, Claude can match emails with calendar appointments to give you the full context of your communications. It's even more useful when connecting Claude to your work applications. Instead of switching between Gmail, Google Calendar, and Asana, you can handle everything through Claude's interface.

Claude's email summary was surprisingly clever.

After connecting Claude to Gmail, some people decided to test its summarizing capabilities with a few real-world scenarios. They didn't expect much, as most AI tools provide general overviews, missing important details.

However, Claude proved otherwise. Its email summarization capabilities went far beyond simply extracting text. It understood context, the relationships between emails, and what needed action rather than just information.

Let's start with a simple request, "Summarize all emails this week that require my response." Claude identified two emails to track. It completely ignored promotional content, transaction receipts, newsletters, and automated security notifications—exactly what we wanted.

Next, try a broader request by asking, "What are the main topics in my inbox over the past 48 hours?". It provided an analysis of security and account management, service and transaction announcements, and promotional content. This was far more helpful than scrolling through each email to find patterns yourself.

The real test came when Claude was asked, "Find any important emails that I may have missed in the last two weeks." It highlighted potential job opportunities buried under other emails.

Claude didn't just read, it interpreted. When asked to summarize a long series of emails about project delays, it extracted the key decision points and action items while omitting irrelevant back-and-forth discussions that weren't relevant to moving forward.

The time Claude saves in managing simple emails far outweighs the occasional slowdowns or formatting errors. If you're struggling with an overload of emails, you can certainly achieve an "empty inbox," but it's best used as an email assistant rather than a complete replacement for your own judgment and oversight.
