How to Play CryptoKitties: A Safe Beginner's Guide

CryptoKitties is an Ethereum-based collecting game in which each digital cat is a unique blockchain token. Players can collect, buy, sell, and breed cats, but it is not a conventional pet simulator: there is no feeding or real-time care system. Most of the activity centers on collecting traits and creating new combinations through breeding.

Playing involves cryptocurrency transactions, variable network fees, and assets whose resale value can fall to zero. Treat any spending as entertainment money, not as a guaranteed investment.

What you need before playing

• Enough ETH for any purchase or breeding price and the separate network fee.

Open the official CryptoKitties website and follow its current connection prompts. Never enter a wallet recovery phrase into CryptoKitties, a search result, a direct message, or a support form. Anyone with that phrase can control the wallet.

How to get started

1. Set up a wallet safely. Install the wallet only from its official source. Record the recovery information offline and do not share it.
2. Fund the wallet cautiously. If you choose to buy ETH, use a service permitted in your location. Confirm the destination address and network before sending. A small test transfer can reduce the cost of an addressing mistake, although it also incurs a fee.
3. Connect to the official game. Read every permission request. Connecting a wallet is not the same as approving a purchase, but later signature or transaction prompts may authorize an action.
4. Review a cat before buying. Check the listed price, generation, cooldown, traits, ownership history, and estimated network fee. Reject the wallet prompt if any amount or address is unexpected.
5. Confirm ownership on-chain. After a transaction completes, the cat should appear in the game and may also be visible in the wallet's NFT view. A block explorer can verify the token owner if the interface is slow to update.

How cat traits and breeding work

Each CryptoKitty has visible attributes, commonly called cattributes, as well as encoded genes that influence offspring. A kitten may inherit visible or hidden genes from either parent, and certain gene combinations can produce mutations. Breeding therefore involves probability rather than a guaranteed recipe.

Generation is based on the parents: breeding cats from different generations produces a kitten one generation above the higher-generation parent. Lower-generation cats generally start with faster cooldown speeds, but generation alone does not determine desirability or market value.

Cooldown is the rest period before a cat can breed again. It becomes longer as that cat breeds repeatedly. Before agreeing to breed, check both the breeding charge and the blockchain fee; either can make a seemingly inexpensive plan costly.

Choosing a first CryptoKitty

• Set a total budget that includes network fees, not just the listing price.
• Use the marketplace filters to compare similar cats rather than relying on labels such as “rare.”
• Inspect the cat's generation, cooldown, traits, parents, and sale history.
• Do not assume that a rare-looking trait guarantees a buyer or future profit.
• Avoid rushing because of countdowns, unsolicited offers, or social-media messages.

Wallet and transaction safety

Blockchain transactions are generally difficult or impossible to reverse. Before approving one, verify the website domain, wallet account, network, contract interaction, price, and fee. Keep browser extensions to a minimum and disconnect the game when you are finished.
