Efforts to make users love ChatGPT 5
ChatGPT users have voiced their dissatisfaction with ChatGPT 5. They prefer the flexibility and natural feel of ChatGPT 40 and are not interested in the new personalities or customization options.
Many users have switched back to ChatGPT 4o, even though this version is only available to paid users. This is the first step in appeasing angry users while still trying to convince free users to adopt the new version.
Now, OpenAI is offering a new personalization page. The aim is to bring all the personalization options together, making it easier to customize ChatGPT 5 to work exactly the way you want. This includes fine-tuning it to feel more like the beloved ChatGPT 40.
The response to this announcement has been largely negative. Users don't want to go through the complicated steps to use their preferred AI model. But currently, if you're a free user, you only have two options: Customize it or use an alternative software to ChatGPT .
Find personalization options in ChatGPT 5
This article uses the desktop version of ChatGPT , but the steps are the same on both mobile and desktop devices.
Log in to your account, click on your profile icon and your name. Select Personalization .
From here, you'll find personalities, customization guides, and many other sections to customize how ChatGPT 5 responds to you.
Make sure you have enabled customization in the Personalization section ; otherwise, you won't be able to set any options.
Choose a more appealing personality.
Personalizing ChatGPT 5 starts with choosing a better personality. Generally, the default personality is quite bland and uninteresting compared to ChatGPT 40. This is one of the reasons why users weren't very satisfied with it.
You have 5 personality types to choose from:
- Default
- Cynic
- Robot
- Listener
- Nerd
For more collaborative and interactive options, choose Listener or Nerd . You can change it at any time. Just keep in mind that changing your personality only affects future conversations, not previous ones.
Listeners are better suited to more thoughtful answers, like those you'd get from a friend. Nerds are ideal for enthusiastic research. Think of them as a fun research assistant who's just as interested in whatever random topic you're exploring as you are.
Additional personalized ChatGPT 5 guidelines are recommended.
Personality is only a small part of customizing ChatGPT 5. A common mistake many users make is only personalizing their conversation within the chat box itself. They might request a specific tone or want it to respond more like ChatGPT 4. But eventually, ChatGPT forgets about this, defaulting back to the default tone and settings of ChatGPT 5.
You need to add your personalization instructions to the Personalization screen in the Custom instructions section .
Click the three dots next to the Custom instructions box to see suggestions. Click on as many suggestions as you like to add suggested instructions.
If you delete the suggested text, you won't see the suggested style in the list below again until you close the Personalization window and reopen it.
This is the easiest option for most users. Combine the suggested options until you get a feel for it, reminiscent of ChatGPT 40. It won't be a perfect match, but it will be much closer to the default ChatGPT 5 settings.
Add detailed customization instructions.
The ability to personalize ChatGPT 5 isn't limited to the suggested options. Make a list of all the things you love about your interactions with ChatGPT 40. For many users, this includes being more creative, more conversational, more detailed, and more adaptable.
You should open Notepad, Microsoft Word (any other free alternative software will work well), Google Docs , or any other text editor. Create a detailed list of instructions. You can use bullet points. A good example is this custom guide from a Reddit user . You don't necessarily have to use their list, but it shows how detailed you can be.
When adding instructions, customize them to suit your specific needs. One of the things users loved about ChatGPT 40 was how it adapted to their needs based on the conversation. ChatGPT 5 doesn't do this as well. So, add instructions to help ChatGPT understand you better.
For example, if you're a technical documentation writer, you could add 'Approach the answers from a technical documentation writer's perspective' . You can also add your occupation to the Occupation field in the Personalization window so ChatGPT understands you better.
Remember, the custom guidelines you set up will apply to all future conversations. You can change them at any time.
You are limited to 1,500 characters, so keep it as concise as possible. When finished, click Save to save your settings.
Currently, you cannot have different custom instruction sets. Some workarounds include:
- In your list, add prefixes to different instructions to help ChatGPT distinguish between them. For example, use CIW (Custom Instructions Writer) for instructions that apply to writing. For general research, you can use CIR (Custom Instructions Research). When chatting, refer to that prefix.
- Save a document with all your different custom instruction sets. Then, simply copy and paste them when needed. You can save less frequently used instructions directly in the chat window or in the Personalization page. Notation is a good way to organize things. You can even access it offline if needed.
- Create custom GPTs. Each GPT can have its own set of instructions. This feature is only available to paid users.
Completely customizing ChatGPT 5 to be more like ChatGPT 40 requires some effort. But with some ChatGPT 5 customizations, free users can still enjoy more of the personality of ChatGPT 40.
If you want to transfer your customizations to WhatsApp and Telegram, simply link your accounts. Then, chat with ChatGPT in your favorite chat app.
