Fsutil 8dot3name command in Windows
Applies to : Windows Server (Semi-Annual Channel), Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012. Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7.
The Fsutil 8dot3name command queries or changes the settings for short name behavior (name 8dot3), including:
- Query the current setting for short name behavior.
- Scanning the specified directory path for registry keys may be affected if the short name is removed from the specified directory path.
- Change the short name behavior control settings. This setting can be applied to a specified drive or to the default drive installation.
- Delete the short name for all files in a folder

The command parameter Fsutil 8dot3name
Querying the file system for the state of creating short name 8dot3 behavior.
If VolumePath is not specified as a parameter, the behavior of creating the default 8dot3name short name for all drives will be displayed.
scan Scanning for files located in the specified DirectoryPath for registry keys may be affected if short name 8dot3 is removed from the file name. đặt {| }Change file system behavior to create 8dot3 names in the following cases:
When DefaultValue is specified, registry key: HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetControlFileSystemNtfsDisable8dot3NameCreationNtfsDisable8dot3NameCreationNtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation
will be set to DefaultValue.
DefaultValue can have the following values:
- 0: Allows creation of 8dot3 names for all drives on the system.
- 1: Disable creation of 8dot3 names for all drives on the system.
- 2: Set up the creation of 8dot3 names on a drive-based basis.
- 3: Disable creating 8dot3 names for all drives except the system drive.
When a VolumePath is specified, the drives specified on the drive's 8dot3name properties will be set to allow creation of 8dot3 names for a specified drive (0) or set to disable creation. 8dot3 name on the specified drive (1).
You must set the default file system behavior for creating 8dot3 names to value 2 before you can enable or disable the creation of 8dot3 names for a specified drive.
stripRemove the 8dot3 file name for all files located in the specified DirectoryPath . The 8dot3 file name is not deleted for any file DirectoryPath associated with the file name contains more than 260 characters.
This command lists, but does not modify the registry keys that point to permanently deleted files named 8dot3.
For more information about the effect of permanently deleting 8dot3 file names from files, see the note below.
Specify the drive letter followed by a colon or GUID in Volume { GUID } format. / fSpecifies that all files placed in the specified directory will be deleted from the 8dot3 file name even if the registry key points to the file by the file name 8dot3. In this case, remove the 8dot3 file name, but do not modify any registry keys that point to the file using the 8dot3 file name.
Warning : You should back up the folder or drive before using the / f parameter as it may lead to an unexpected application error, including being unable to uninstall the program.
/ l []Specify the log file where the information will be written.
If the / l parameter is not specified, all information is written to the default log file:
% temp% 8dot3_removal_log @ ( GMT YYYY-MM-DD HH-MM-SS ) .log / s Specifies that the operation should be applied to the subdirectories of DirectoryPath specified. / Specifies that the name removal 8dot3 file will be run in test mode. All operations except the actual removal of 8dot3 file names are done. You can use the test mode to discover which registry key points to the file using the 8dot3 file name./v Specifies that all information written to the log file is also displayed on the command line.Note
Permanently delete 8dot3 file names and do not modify the registry key pointing to the 8dot3 file name, which may lead to unexpected application errors, including the inability to uninstall the application. You should back up the folder or drive before attempting to delete the 8dot3 file name.
Fsutil 8dot3name command example
To query the behavior of disabling 8dot3 names for a drive specified with the GUID, {928842df-5a01-11de-a85c-806e6f6e6963}, enter:
fsutil 8dot3name query Volume{928842df-5a01-11de-a85c-806e6f6e6963}
You can also query 8dot3 name behavior using the behavior command.
To remove the 8dot3 file name in the D: MyData folder and all subdirectories, while still writing information to the specified log file as mylogfile.log, type:
fsutil 8dot3name scan /l mylogfile.log /sd:MyData
