Firefox still supports Windows 10 after the operating system is discontinued

This week, Windows 10 officially reached the end of its free support period from Microsoft. But that doesn't mean things will stop — especially for Firefox users.

According to a new announcement from Mozilla, Windows 10 is still the primary platform for many Firefox users. So, unlike the way the company handled older operating systems like Windows 7 or 8, Firefox on Windows 10 will continue to receive full updates—including new features, bug fixes, and security updates—just like on Windows 11. In other words, Firefox on Windows 10 will still have the same modern, full experience, at least for the foreseeable future.

However, neither Mozilla nor Microsoft are encouraging users to stick with Windows 10 long-term. Mozilla emphasizes that your overall security still depends on the operating system and other software and hardware. Therefore, if your computer is eligible, the company recommends upgrading to Windows 11 – the upgrade is free and can be done directly from Windows Update.

Mozilla also reassures users that when upgrading to Windows 11, all Firefox data – including history, bookmarks, and passwords – will be completely preserved.

Of course, not everyone can (or wants) to upgrade to Windows 11. For those still on Windows 10, Mozilla recommends enabling Microsoft's Extended Security Updates (ESU) program.

These updates don't add new features or fix minor bugs, but they're important for system security. You can sign up for them for free by selecting the 'Windows Backup' option in Windows Update.

Finally, if the reason you can't upgrade is hardware, turn on Firefox Sync. This will sync all your bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history to your new machine with a single sign-on – making switching to another PC easier than ever.
