About Eternal Strands
Eternal Strands offers creative, improvised combat in a completely different way. The game's best moments are jaw-dropping, like grabbing onto a giant, freezing its hand to avoid being thrown, and timing your attack before leaping off its back in dramatic fashion. Unfortunately, these moments are marred by inconsistent physics, weird weather mechanics, and repetitive small-enemy combat that detract from the experience over the course of the roughly 30-hour journey.
Eternal Strands builds a rich world with a fascinating history and lore, but not enough to be engaging. Players follow Brynn, a warrior of the "Weavers" - outcasts of society after the magical disaster known as The Surge. She and her teammates break through the magical veil of The Veil to enter The Enclave, a once bustling hub of magic that has become isolated since The Surge.

The biggest highlight of Eternal Strands is the physical interaction system between the character's abilities and the surrounding environment. For example, players can use ice streams to freeze enemies, extinguish fires, make metal armor brittle, or create ice bridges to overcome obstacles. In particular, players can also pin the limbs of giants to the ground, creating an opportunity to climb on them and attack weak points.
The second main ability is telekinesis, which allows you to lift and throw objects, but it's not too groundbreaking. However, it integrates well with the combat system – for example, some enemies have elemental absorbing shields, but the player can exploit that by throwing the shield back at them and causing an explosion.
The most exciting battles are against the 'Great Foes' – giant bosses that are reminiscent of Shadow of the Colossus and Horizon. Players can climb on their bodies, dodge their brutal attacks, or use creative tactics like freezing their limbs to disrupt their movements. Each boss has its own mystery, which when solved, can reward power-ups or rare materials for crafting equipment.

Eternal Strands' exploration system offers a similar freedom to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Players can climb across surfaces and collect materials from the environment to craft items. However, the rewards from exploration are not really attractive, mainly in the form of crafting materials or equipment blueprints, rather than permanent stat upgrades like health or stamina.
Eternal Strands doesn't have a traditional leveling system, instead character progression is based on gear. Players can craft and upgrade armor by gathering materials from the environment and enemies. This system keeps every piece of armor relevant, but it lacks the convenience of having an option to save sets for quick swaps.

Eternal Strands offers some great boss battles, an innovative combat system, and a world with a lot of potential, but it's let down by a slow story, monotonous daily combat, and a frustrating weather system. Still, the moments spent conquering the Great Foes are enough to make gamers willing to overcome the weaknesses to experience the game's peak.
