Drinking a lot of sugar during pregnancy is at risk for asthma in young children later
A new study shows that mothers who drink a lot of sugar during pregnancy may increase their risk of allergies and asthma allergies.
Accordingly, research by scientists from Queen Mary University in London (QMUL) has shown a link between free sugars, such as those found in soft drinks and sweet processed foods. different from asthma and some other common allergies.
It shows that in mothers who have the highest sugar intake by consuming food or drinks or sugars in honey, syrup and sweet juices will have a 38% risk of allergies in children after born, 73% for allergies with two or more and up to 101% for allergic asthma.
The researchers explained this association is due to the high intake of fructose in the mother, which causes persistent allergic immune reactions that lead to lung allergies in developing children.
Interestingly, the amount of sugar consumed by children in childhood was found to be unrelated to the results of the analysis, the researchers added.
In order to reach this conclusion, the scientific team surveyed approximately 9,000 mother-daughter pairs beginning in the 1990s.
They analyzed the relationship between maternal and infant pregnancy blood sugar levels with asthma symptoms, wheezing, high fever, eczema, sunburn and lung function in children aged 7-9 years. .
The results show that the amount of sugar consumed by mothers is related to allergy status and tends to develop allergies such as allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma and atopic dermatitis (eczema).
However, there is no relationship with eczema or high fever.
Lead researcher Seif Shaheen, Professor of QMUL Institute said: "We cannot confirm early that the high sugar intake by pregnant mothers will cause allergies and allergies in children. , with very high sugar consumption, we will certainly investigate this hypothesis with a relatively more precise precision, " Shaheen said.
"In the meantime, we recommend that pregnant women follow current guidelines and avoid excessive sugar consumption," he added.
This study has just been published in European Respiratory Journal.
