CEO Tim Cook: You can succeed without a University diploma
While the bachelor's degree received after four years of university has become a common requirement for many jobs in the US, Apple CEO Tim Cook has another thought.
According to Mr. Cook, there are some skills that the labor market is in need of but students do not necessarily have to study in universities, most notably programming skills.
"In fact, there is always a mismatch between the skills that universities teach and the skills we and other businesses need in the future, the most concrete of which is skills. programming - we need but universities do not provide enough, " Tim Cook said during the meeting of the US Labor Force Policy Advisory Board with the participation of President Donald Trump along with the directors of the other big companies in the US.
Cook also added that about half of Apple's job opportunities in the United States last year were given to people who didn't have a college degree.
Apple CEO believes that every child in the US must have a degree in programming before graduating from high school. Apple launched Everyone Can Code program in 2016, a programming curriculum designed for students from kindergarten to university, to help them interact with the code soon. Currently, according to Tim Cook, about 4,000 schools in the US use Apple's curriculum.
Apple is one of the few major corporations in the US that does not require a University degree for certain jobs. The remaining companies also apply this policy to Google, IBM, Bank of America and Hilton.
According to statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the United States, although employment opportunities for people without college degrees are expanding, the average weekly income of this group is still much lower than the degree. Specifically, in 2018, the average weekly income of those who graduated from high school was USD 730 while this figure for those with bachelor's degrees was USD 1,198.
Apple founder - legend Steve Jobs was also famous for founding Apple in 1976 after leaving school at Reed College.
"So we never really think that a college degree is something you need to work on , " Tim Cook said. "We always try to expand our horizons . "
