Following the journey of the main character Eren in Attack on Titan, we gradually discover unbelievable truths about Titan. Accordingly, there are all 3 main forms of Titan: Purebred Titan, Anomalous Titan and Titan Shifter.

If the purebred Titan and the anomalous Titan are both unconscious beings and simply differ in their movement habits, the Titan Shifter is the heir to the power and soul of the ancestor Ymir. These individuals can arbitrarily transform into Titans and retain their original human bodies and intelligence. In addition, they also possess their own special abilities.

The reason why the Titan Shifters are so special is that they are descended from the royal family of Eldia. The 9 Titan Shifter are the closest descendants to the ancestor Ymir and they were born only to serve the line of King Fritz to fulfill his ambition to rule the world.

In contrast, purebred Titans and anomalous Titans are mostly human mutants. And just as King Fritz wanted, they were completely unconscious for the First Titan to control at will.

It is even possible that Ancestor Ymir is still quietly controlling the world of Attack on Titan. Although her body died thousands of years ago, Ymir's soul still lives in "Coordinates". Therefore, it is possible that Ymir has always been the one to keep the consciousness for the Titan Shifter to create a counterbalance to the Primordial Titan to prevent the extinction of all humanity when the "Shake" is activated.
