YouTube is testing a new policy that will allow some banned creators to reopen new channels after a year, except in cases of copyright infringement.
YouTube – the world's largest video-sharing platform – is a major source of income for millions of content creators. However, the system also has very strict rules about what is allowed to appear. Violations can result in severe penalties, including demonetization, video removal, or even permanent deletion.
YouTube recently announced that it will allow some previously banned creators to return, under certain conditions.
Previously, when a channel was banned, the penalty was almost 'life imprisonment' – meaning the account was permanently deleted. Creators could only appeal in a few special cases, such as when the policy violation was no longer covered by YouTube's new rules. But now, Google has opened the door to 'rebirth' for more content creators.
Specifically, creators who have been banned will be able to reopen a new channel and start over if they meet certain criteria. This decision will be based on a number of factors, such as the severity of the violation, the person's influence on and off the platform, and whether the violation is a repeat offense.
If they meet the criteria, they will be allowed to return with a completely new channel, starting their journey of growth and monetization as before. However, this 'second chance' program does not apply to accounts deleted for copyright infringement, and will only be activated after at least one year from the date the channel was deleted.
YouTube also stressed that the initiative does not replace the existing appeals system. If a channel is successful in its appeal, it will be reinstated; a 'second chance' is only available to those who have failed in their appeals and have been removed for more than a year.
The program is currently rolling out to a small group of eligible creators. When they sign in to YouTube Studio on their computer, they'll see the option to ' Request a new channel ' .
