The US is trying to catch up with China in developing advanced battery technology for the future.

Based in New York (USA), Sionic Energy has developed a 100% silicon anode using a patented silicon carbon composite material from Group14 Technologies, a prominent company in the field of silicon technology innovation.

Sionic CEO Ed Williams said the company chose Group14 as the best performing partner to launch its silicon battery platform after years of research and work with leading silicon materials. Silicon, an abundant material, is being developed by companies such as Panasonic to replace graphite in anode manufacturing, aiming to create cheaper and more efficient products.

Sionic says its technology can reduce manufacturing costs by up to 30% thanks to 'seamless manufacturing integration'. Sionic's batteries have been tested to last up to 1,200 charge/discharge cycles with up to a 50% increase in energy density, meaning they can store more electricity per gram of battery. The technology is also designed to improve safety and voltage stability, reducing the risk of thermal runaway, a serious problem in battery cells.

The partnership between Sionic Energy and Group14 Technologies is very promising.

Sionic aims to power aviation and electronics this year, electric vehicles in 2026, and grid storage in 2027. Developing silicon battery technology not only reduces costs, but also reduces pollution. Each electric vehicle that replaces a gasoline-powered car can prevent thousands of kilograms of harmful emissions each year, while saving consumers about $1,500 a year in gas and maintenance costs.

While federal electric vehicle tax breaks are stalled, many states are still offering credits to help with vehicle purchases. Electric vehicle tax incentives of up to $7,500 are still in effect, opening the door for consumers to switch to greener vehicles.

As for Group14, co-founder Rick Costantino said: 'Our customers continue to raise the bar for battery performance and we are excited to support Sionic's silicon batteries.' According to the company, silicon battery technology promises to be a major step forward in developing sustainable energy solutions in the future.
