British security firm Sophos has recorded a record number of 1,685 new variants in just 31 days, bringing the total number of worms to 112,142. However, the 10 most dangerous viruses of the month still belong to the three lines of Netsky, Mytob and Zafi.

The Netsky.P worm continues to show its persistent vitality since its discovery 20 months ago. It still topped the rankings despite a slight decrease from 18.6% to 17.13%. However, Mytob.GH, who first appeared on October 16, quickly took the 2nd place and showed no signs of weakening. This variant is likely to take over Sven Jaschan's "work" in November.

Sophos also said that nearly two-thirds of the viruses they recorded in the month were Mytob relatives, especially the versions of GH and EX had a great influence. "The onslaught of new threats over the last time is not so surprising because virus writers who are investing more in games can give them millions," Carole Theriault, adviser Sophos security, say. "Mytob dynasty continues to grow and penetrate the network more and more rapidly and quickly.
