Monkey mother ate the decaying young baby, strange behavior was first discovered in monkeys

A mother monkey in an Italian animal sanctuary has spent a lot of time caring for her baby even though she died. The monkey belongs to the Tonkean long-tailed monkey, called Evalyne, and lives in the Parco reserve Faunistico di Piano dell'Abatino. Monkey Tonkea never eat cannibalism, and even they are "vegetarian" species.

This is the first time monkey Evalyne has been a mother. Unfortunately, his child was unable to survive after 4 days of birth.

Researcher Arianna De Marco tried to observe Evalyne's behavior after her child died. The first 2 days when the baby monkey died, the mother monkey cried, screaming at her own shadow printed on the plastic glass door. After that, the mother monkey started brushing, cuddling, watching her face and holding her baby's body all the time, wherever the body began to stink.

After 14 days, the head of the dried corpse fell off, but the mother monkey Evalyne continued to take care of her body, brushing her hair.

But on the nineteenth day, everything became weird, and Evalyne began gnawing on her body. This is the first time that science has witnessed this behavior in Tonkean long-tailed monkey.

On the 22nd day, the corpse of the baby monkey was completely decayed, but Evalyne still kept a part of her body in her hand, or in her mouth.

Marco saw the last of the monkey's body on the 25th day, when it had only a leg bone or arm bone.

Currently, De Marco and other researchers do not know what caused the mother monkey to behave so strangely.

However, De Marco thinks that the cause may stem from the fact that the monkey has lived a few days before his death. Although there were only four short days, that time was enough to create a strong bond of maternal love.
