In August 2025, Yandex released access to its latest model, YandexGPT 5.1 Pro, which outperformed the previous version in 58% of cases and OpenAI's GPT-4.1 in 56% of cases (according to Yandex).

YandexGPT 5.1 Pro

The top model, available on Yandex Cloud:

1. The context window has 128,000 tokens (approximately 240 pages of text) – a significant increase from 32,000 tokens in the previous generation.
2. The inference speed is 2.5 times faster than YandexGPT 4 Pro.
3. Supports Chain-of-Reasoning mode – similar to inference models (o3, DeepSeek R1).
4. Ranked second in the SLAVA benchmark (a comprehensive standard for evaluating core language models in Russian) after Alice AI LLM.

Alice AI LLM

The next-generation core language model, leading the SLAVA standard for Russian. Optimized for conversational tasks, context extraction, and personal assistants.

Alice AI LLM and YandexGPT belong to different model families. Alice AI is designed for assistant/agent scenarios (Alice), while YandexGPT targets a wider range of tasks through its API.

YandexGPT Lite

Lightweight models (versions 4 and 5) are for quick responses and simple tasks. They run faster and are cheaper, but have limited capabilities. Ideal for chatbots, quick queries, and batch operations.

Shedevrum: Create images and videos

Shedevrum is Yandex's neural network for generating images and videos (up to 6 seconds in 16:9, 9:16, and 1:1 formats).

Ecosystem capacity

1. Access via Alice – use YandexGPT through the voice assistant on your smartphone, smart speaker, and other devices.
2. Integrated with the Yandex browser – a built-in AI assistant to work with website content, summarize text, and answer questions about page content.

Alice Pro: An AI assistant for businesses

Alice Pro is an enhanced version of the AI ​​assistant, integrated with data from your Yandex 360 subscription. Functionally, it's similar to Google NotebookLM – allowing you to work with business documents and data.

The services are built on YandexGPT.

Yandex doesn't focus too much on high-end models, but rather on creating 'useful services' for users:

1. Chatbot Alice and smart speaker – voice assistants for everyday tasks.
2. Shedevrum – create images and coloring pages for children.
3. Video transcription service – 300.ya.ru.
4. The Yandex browser integrates video transcription and summarization features.
5. Alice Pro – an AI solution similar to Google Workspace – allows you to work with data from your subscription plan.

YandexGPT price

The basic version of YandexGPT is offered free through Alice and the Yandex browser. From July 2025, most advanced features in 'Chat with Alice' supported by the Pro model – including inference mode and file processing – have also become free.

For developers (via Yandex Cloud, AI Studio, starting March 3, 2026):

1. Free plan – free trial access to the API.
2. Alice AI LLM – 0.50₽/1K tokens input, 1.20₽/1K tokens output.
3. YandexGPT Pro 5.1 – 0.80₽/1K tokens.
4. YandexGPT Lite – 0.20₽/1K tokens.

Through Yandex 360 for Business – the business subscription package includes the extended capabilities of YandexGPT as part of a virtual office with whiteboards, documents, and other collaboration tools.

Performance comparison results

Alice AI LLM is considered the most powerful model from Russia. It handles analytical and problem-solving tasks quite well and ranks average to lower globally. However, it has a notable weakness in training and development scenarios – the model frequently cuts off answers midway, leaving 40-60% of tasks unfinished.

YandexGPT Pro 5.1 ranks lower. It often refuses to answer questions directly, citing 'lack of current data' – even for topics that are well-established and extensively documented. The YandexGPT Pro 5 and Lite models score near the bottom.

A surprising finding: Russian models did not outperform their international competitors even in tasks specific to Russia – questions involving Russian law, cultural context, and regional business practices. Chinese models like the Kimi K2.5 consistently handled those scenarios better.

YandexGPT remains a specialized, region-focused product. There are many more powerful free alternatives available globally: DeepSeek, Qwen, ChatGPT, and Claude all outperform YandexGPT in almost every task category.

Limit

1. Its quality falls short of the industry giants – in independent tests, YandexGPT ranked behind ChatGPT 5 and Claude 4.6, although the gap was minimal for Russian language tasks.
2. Ecosystem locked – full features are only unlocked within the Yandex ecosystem.
3. The context is limited – 128,000 tokens compared to Claude's 1 million and Gemini's 2 million.
4. Lack of a global community means fewer integrations, plugins, and third-party tools.
