Prior to this update, players could find diamonds anywhere below y level 16, with an equal chance of spawning on each level. However, in Minecraft 1.18, players need to dig even deeper to find diamond ore.

Ores are found at level 15 or below, most commonly between -50 and -64, where -59 and -58 are the preferred levels for diamond mining, as long as they do not contain bedrock.

Tools needed to mine diamonds

To find and mine diamonds effectively, players should prepare the following items:

  1. A couple of iron, diamond, or netherite picks (bring 2 or more, in case one breaks).
  2. Food to supplement health.
  3. Some torches to prevent mobs from spawning
  4. A bucket of water (to turn lava into obsidian or remove burning from lava).
  5. Crafting table for creating mineral blocks and furnaces
  6. A shovel to remove dirt and gravel
  7. Rich weapons and armor to fight monsters.

How to speed up diamond mining

Using TNT

Using TNT is one of the fastest ways to mine, but it requires the player to remove a large number of creepers to get gunpowder and get a lot of sand.

With a large amount of TNT, the player can detonate them one by one, explode a large block, or place a block every 5 meters. TNT drops 100% of items in the Java version, but this method is not possible in the Bedrock version.

Fortune III

If you can't increase the mining speed, the best way is to use the Efficiency spell. The pickaxe to mine ore should have Fortune III. That's why players should immediately own an enchantment table if they want to collect a lot of diamonds.

People can also temporarily replace Fortune III with Silk Touch. Store blocks in the inventory until you get a Fortune III pickaxe for diamond mining.
