How to enable IPv6 on a TP-Link WiFi 6 router

Your internet service provider should offer IPv6 connectivity, and if possible, you should enable IPv6 on your router. The benefits of making this switch include better security and slightly improved speeds.

All modern wireless routers , including those manufactured by TP-Link, can use IPv6 addresses to connect to the Internet . Your Internet service provider should offer IPv6 connectivity, and if possible, you should enable IPv6 on your router. The benefits of making this switch include better security and slightly improved speeds. Here's how to enable IPv6 on any TP-Link router with WiFi 6.

How to find IPv6 settings on a TP-Link WiFi 6 router

Before enabling IPv6 address and internet connection on your TP-Link router, you must access the appropriate settings. This can only be done from the TP-Link router's firmware , not from the Tether app. Therefore, open a web browser on your computer and navigate to tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1. Next, enter the admin password for your TP-Link WiFi 6 router and click LOG IN .

TIP : If neither of the two addresses mentioned above works, check out all the ways to find your router's IP address .

First, you'll see the network map and some basic settings. IPv6 settings can be found by clicking or tapping on Advanced.

In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and tap IPv6. You can then see all of your TP-Link router's IPv6 settings on the right.

How to enable IPv6 on a TP-Link WiFi 6 router

In the IPv6 Internet section on the right, set the IPv6 toggle switch to the ON position .

By default, TP-Link routers should use the same Internet connection type and settings as IPv4. However, if you are not satisfied with the settings, click or tap the 'Internet Connection Type' drop-down list , select the appropriate type, and enter your settings.

The internet connection in the example is PPPoE , and the TP-Link WiFi 6 router will correctly check the 'Share the same PPPoE session with IPv4' option , meaning there's no other configuration to make. However, if you have a different type of internet connection, such as Static IP or 6to4 Tunnel , you may need to enter your specific settings. An Advanced Settings link is also available .

Clicking on Advanced Settings will display more configuration options, including how your router receives IPv6 addresses. This article recommends using Auto or Specified by ISP (after contacting your provider to obtain the necessary settings). You can also specify which DNS addresses are used. If you want to use custom addresses, select 'Use the Following DNS Addresses' and enter the IPv6 addresses of your preferred DNS servers .

Once you've set everything up, don't forget to press Connect so your TP-Link router connects to the Internet with the new settings and starts using the IPv6 address.

The internet connection will be down for a few seconds while the router establishes a connection via IPv6.

Good luck!
