In fact, if not cleaned regularly, shower heads can become clogged with mineral deposits, bacteria, and even mold, affecting both the water flow in the shower as well as the cleanliness of the water.

This article will share with you advice from industry experts on how often you should clean your shower head.

How often should you clean your shower?

While every cleaning expert has their own preferences on how often to clean your shower, they all agree that you should clean your shower at least once a month.

For example, Rachel Mullaney, branch manager at Merry Maids Leicester, recommends a deep clean of the shower once a month, but a light clean every week.

Meanwhile, you can do a more thorough cleaning just a few times a year, says Alicia Sokolowski, president and co-CEO at AspenClean.

" Ideally, you should lightly clean or wipe down your showerhead at least once a month to prevent buildup ," says Sokolowski. " Then, every three months, give your showerhead a thorough cleaning ."

Over time, showerheads can become clogged with mineral deposits, and sometimes even bacteria and mold. Regular cleaning will prevent buildup, help maintain a strong and consistent water flow, and ensure cleaner water for your showerhead.

What should I use to clean the shower?

When it comes time to deep clean your shower, cleaning expert and owner of Merry Maids Wakefield, Gina Glendinning, recommends always using a descaling product and a grout brush.

Some professional cleaning services recommend vinegar for those who want to do their own, environmentally friendly shower cleaning, but Glendinning adds that many services can use more effective specialized products.

If you want a gentle cleaning to tackle problems like water stains and soap scum, Sokolowski says a basic solution like dish soap, warm water, and a soft microfiber cloth may be all you need.

What should not be used to clean the shower?

When it comes to cleaning your shower, Sokolowski, Mullaney, and Glendinning certainly have their own favorite products, but they all agree that there are certain tools and solutions you should never use to clean your shower.

" Never use bleach ," Glendinning advises. " Bleach will damage the chrome and rubber fittings inside the shower ."

Mullaney agrees: " Bleach can also react with mineral deposits inside the showerhead and release toxic fumes. "

Additionally, Sokolowski says it's best to stay away from any abrasive powders or scouring pads, as they can scratch showerhead materials like chrome and nickel, or harsh chemical cleaners, as they can wear down protective coatings or discolor the showerhead.

How to clean shower head

Detachable shower head

  1. Start by removing the faucet head from the pipe or faucet.
  2. If you want to clean with a natural solution like vinegar, start by pouring vinegar into a bowl, plastic bag, or even your sink.
  3. Submerge the showerhead directly into the solution until completely submerged and let the vinegar and nozzle sit for at least several hours, ideally overnight.
  4. When you come back, use a grout brush or old toothbrush to scrub the nozzle clean and remove any debris.
  5. Rinse with hot water, screw the shower head back on and turn on the shower to rinse off any remaining residue.

Other shower heads

  1. You can use a similar process by pouring vinegar into a plastic bag, placing the bag over the shower head and letting it soak.
  2. You should secure the plastic bag with a rubber band or twist tie and make sure the nozzles are submerged in the solution.
  3. Let the solution soak for at least two hours, overnight if possible.
  4. Continue with the steps outlined for the removable shower head.
