How does Witcher vs Game of Thrones compare Star Wars to Star Trek, Watchmen to Marvel?
With the participation of actor Henry Cavill, the context is quite new compared to the previous series of Netflix and of course the "scent" from the games of the same name, it is not difficult to understand when The Witcher attracts so much attention. And, considering the theme of "magic sword" (fantasy) of this series, considering the content of the film is somewhat cruel and desperate, it is not difficult to understand when many people compare The Witcher to the Game of Thrones, the fantasy-themed drama, has garnered the most attention in the last decade.
However, the difference between Witcher and GoT just stops here. If someone thinks that Witcher follows GoT, I assure you that this person doesn't understand Witcher at all.
Witcher is also set in a medieval setting with magic colors and dark story tones like GoT.
First, let's talk about the most significant difference between GoT and Witcher, or rather between GoT and nearly all other popular fantasy series: GoT has no main character. Rather, the GoT series is told from the perspective of the main characters (POV), each book has about 10 such characters. In the movie, the difference between the POV character and the "regular" character is almost gone, viewers only follow a continuous story line from beginning to end.
In contrast, Witcher has the main character - Geralt of Rivia. The Netflix series' story line follows three fairly obvious character routes: Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri, in which Geralt obviously takes the most time. This approach allows viewers to put themselves in the position of the character, thereby "enjoying" the two most important elements of Witcher: the choice and the multi-dimensional character.
How are the choices and the multi-dimensional character of the character shown? In order not to spoil the movie content, I would like to use the content of a very, very small side mission in the game Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (also a work adapted from the original work of Andrzej Sapkowski). This mission begins when Geralt walks into a village and is paid by the villagers to fight a bandit led by a female monster named "Little Red". If according to the normal series, the choice here is extremely simple and easy, right? Geralt will defeat this bandit, returning peace to the villagers.
But in Witcher's world, nothing is as simple as that. When the band of Little Red bandits arrived, this female general made only one request: she would only kill a villager named Bertram and not harm anyone else. The reason is because Bertram was in collusion with Little Red before, this guy points Little Red bandits to families with money to plunder. But gradually, Bertram became greedy, demanding a bigger share. When Little Red refused, Bertram instructed the witch hunter group - a brutal group of soldiers in the game - to kill half of Little Red's bandits.
Witcher's story line is more personal, viewers "live" with the character.
By reading this, you can see that neither of them is a real good person. Like every other option in the game (and movies, and books) Witcher, many of Geralt's choices are so difficult.
Not over yet. Suppose Geralt chooses to protect Bertram and fight Little Red? This female robber in battle will turn into a werewolf (how the author "parodies" the story of Red Riding Hood). Heroes have to fight monsters, of course, would you think so? Not really, because after collapsing under Geralt's silver sword, Little Red reveals a letter from his deceased mother. In the letter, the mother said that both her father and mother were killed by the witch hunter. But:
"Be strong, my sweet girl, because you have both human and wolf blood . I forbid you from taking revenge. That will not revive you, only cause you to face face with the ax of the executioner. You must not die that way. You must prove through your life that man and werewolf can live together in peace. "
That letter made me think. Is Little Red worthy of being considered a monster? Could her bandits embody the teachings of the mother - somehow prove that humans and werewolves can live together without hatred? If I could go back, maybe I chose the opposite direction: to have Little Red take revenge on Bertram. After all, he was just a cheap guy who sold his village, and Little Red didn't want to hurt any other villagers.
Motiv 'choice' is shown very clearly through the famous series of games according to the same principle.
Coming back to the Netflix series, I believe that those who have been fascinated for hundreds of hours with Witcher titles must have seen this "choice" and "multidimensional" motiv reappear in the movie. As in the plot of Geralt's "Butcher of Blaviken", viewers will quickly realize that both the witch Stregobor and the princess Renfri cannot be considered "good people", but it cannot be considered "bad guy". Geralt will make a choice, and very soon, he will regret the choice. Life in the Witcher world turned out not as ideal as ancient fairy tales.
Of course, you could say the same thing about the Games of Thrones: George W. Martin's world is as dark and evil as the history of mankind itself. However, once again, that alone was not enough to bring the Witcher to the wallet of Games of Thrones. We see Games of Thrones as a plot, not to live with a character like Witcher. And, there might be people who disagree with me, but the characters in Games of Thrones are often very difficult to reach the multi-dimensional level in a way as surprising as in Witcher. Ned Stark, Robb Stark are still good to death, Ramsay Bolton and Joffrey are dead and still hated . There are still some more multidimensional characters - typically Dragon Mother or Tyrion, but I'm sure that you watching Witcher will see how to build characters in this world completely different.
Witcher did not build the Games and Thrones characters and plot.
Therefore, comparing Witcher with GoT is no different than Star Wars with Star Trek, Marvel with Watchmen or Twilight with Blade . These series may be similar in context, but their themes are completely different. different. Along is in space, Star Wars is between good and evil, Star Trek is explore. As superheroes, MCU is the battle of ideals, Watchmen is the desperation of the Cold War. Along are vampires, Blade is the battle, Twilight is . sparkling.
And the medieval world with swords and magic, GoT was a gloomy battle of the royal family, Witcher was the difficult choice of the monster-killer. Do not compare the two worlds, you will only get disappointed.
