Bikini atolls from the sky.
Bikini is a 6 km² atoll at the Marshall Islands, in the western Pacific Ocean. Bikini swimsuit is named after the island itself in 1946.
After World War II ended, Bikini Island was under the control of the US government. The US government evacuated all of the islanders and turned it into a test site for nuclear weapons .
Within 12 years (from 1946 to 1958), the US detonated 23 atomic bombs of different sizes. It is also the place where the US military launched the " unforgettable " atomic bombs in human history.
A US 1954 atomic bomb test at Bikini.
The atomic bomb "Little Boy" (small boy) with a volume of 4,400 kg, a length of 3m and a diameter of 71 cm is the nuclear bomb that the US dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. . Causing about 192,020 deaths in Hiroshima due to heat, radiation and other consequences of the "Little Boy" nuclear bomb.
"Fat Man" (fat man) weighs 4,633 kg, 1.5 m in diameter and 3.3 m long is the second atomic bomb that America dropped on Nagasaki , Japan on August 9, 1945, causing 70,000 people died here.
Castle Bravo's experimental atomic bomb made heavy sailors inflicted by Japanese sailors. The amount of radiation spread over an area of 160 km from the center of the explosion, thereby causing the worst nuclear bomb disaster in American history.
After testing the atomic bombs at Bikini, the island became seriously radioactive . According to the announcement of the American Academy of Science, 90% of radioactive sources in Bikini come from Cesium-137 and Barium-173 decay.
Today the radiation is quite high, causing animals, plants and land to be heavily contaminated. Even the amount of radiation can affect the fertility of women. So the Marshall Islands government (declared independent in 1986) was forced to stop all efforts to relocate at Bikini Island.
Accordingly, as long as the amount of radiation absorbed into the human body is higher than 100 millirems per year (measured at Bikini is 184 millirem per year), then the island government does not allow people to settle.
In August 2010, the UNESCO organization recognized Bikini as a World Heritage Site , symbolizing the " dawn of the nuclear era ".
Hopefully, this beautiful island pearl will soon be safe and "home" for people who once migrated back to their native land.
