In May 2025, the three main roles in the Harry Potter TV series were finally announced: Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley. All three are newcomers to the cast with little previous acting experience. McLaughlin had acted in "Grow," a Sky comedy with Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel, Stanton played Matilda in the West End musical of the same name, and Stout had no previous acting experience.

HBO auditioned more than 32,000 children for Daniel Radcliffe's famous lead role in Harry Potter. Executive producer Mark Mylod said the casting team reviewed between 500 and 1,000 audition tapes a day.

" After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce that we have found Harry, Hermione and Ron. The talents of these three unique actors are incredible, and we can't wait for the world to witness their magic on screen. We would like to thank the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's a real joy to discover the wealth of young talent out there, " showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer/director Mark Mylod said in a statement announcing the three cast members.

Other Harry Potter TV cast members include "Conclave" star John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, "I May Destroy You" breakout star Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, "Tumbleweeds" Oscar nominee Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall and "Shaun of the Dead" comedian Nick Frost as Hagrid. Meanwhile, Paul Whitehouse (Tom Stoppard on "Leopoldstadt," Rupert Goold on "Patriots") and Luke Thallon ("The Fast Show," "Harry & Paul") reprise their roles as Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch and Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Quirinus Quirrell, respectively.

The Harry Potter series was written and executive produced by Gardiner. Mylod will executive produce and direct multiple Harry Potter films for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. The series is executive produced by author J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.
