Google will launch new AI smart glasses in 2026.

Google is preparing to launch its first pair of AI-powered smart glasses in 2026, but the version expected to attract the most attention still doesn't have an official release date. The company revealed more details about its Android XR (also known as augmented reality) product line in a recent blog post, following up on an initial announcement at the Google I/O conference in May, which detailed two pairs of AI glasses.

 

One option is a simpler pair of AI glasses, without a screen. It uses built-in speakers, microphones, and cameras to allow users to interact with Google's Gemini AI assistant , take photos, and handle everyday tasks—all without the bulk of traditional headphones.

The second option is a more futuristic one that we're really waiting for: AI glasses with displays. This type of glasses includes a screen within the lens that only shows the wearer things like directions, translated subtitles, and other information superimposed on the real world.

Although the first prototype is expected to launch in 2026 (no specific month given), no details have been revealed regarding the release schedule for AI glasses with displays.

A short preview of the AI ​​glasses with a screen in a new blog post shows a woman using the glasses in her daily life. First, she uses the glasses to translate a sign at a dance studio, then asks Gemini to tell her what dance class is being taught inside, and receives an immediate response in both instances.

Next, she used the glasses to translate live at a restaurant where she didn't speak the language, making it easy for her to find a seat at the bar.

AI glasses feature screens designed to display helpful information directly into your field of vision, providing step-by-step directions, live translated subtitles, and quick access to AI-powered search without looking at your phone. They aim to make digital assistants more seamless and private, allowing you to interact with information without others knowing – you could wear a pair of such glasses without telling people about it.

View digital content and your surroundings simultaneously.

Google has also previously introduced its wired XR glasses, combining a headset-style immersive experience with a view of the real world. XREAL's Project Aura is the first device of its kind, featuring a 70-degree field of view and optical transparency technology that allows digital content to be superimposed on your surroundings.

Essentially, it's like having a private digital workspace anywhere. You can follow recipes displayed on a screen while cooking, view step-by-step instructions when fixing something, or simply multitask without obstructing your view of your surroundings. However, you still need to be connected to a laptop or other device capable of accessing all the information. It's more like a virtual reality headset, resembling eyeglasses.

Project Aura is expected to launch next year, although details are still limited.
