Researchers say that drugs commonly used to treat obese or type 2 diabetics can be used as a new way to reduce brain pressure.

Brain injury, meningitis, water build up in the brain as well as stroke can cause increased pressure inside your skull, which is a major feature of endoscopic hypertension (IIH).

IHH causes daily headaches and puts heavy pressure around the nerves in the eye.

According to the study, GLP-1 drugs used in the treatment of diabetes and obesity may reduce intracranial pressure during operation.

With just 10 minutes of taking the GLP-1 dose, you can reduce brain pressure quickly by about 44%, the researchers added that the effect lasts at least 24 hours.

Alexandra Sinclair from Birmingham University said: "These findings may be a new premise to the treatment strategy for IIH because GLP-1 drugs are being evaluated as safe and widely used drugs. widely used to treat diabetes and obesity ".

Sinclair said: "We are delighted that this new treatment strategy can create a landmark change in the care of patients with future endoscopic hypertension (IIH)."

Researchers are currently starting clinical trials to test GLP-1 in patients with increased brain pressure.

This study has also been published in the Science Translational Medicine journal.
