What is a supermoon?

A "supermoon" occurs when a full moon coincides with the Moon's closest approach to Earth on its elliptical orbit, a point known as perigee. During each 27-day orbit around Earth, the Moon reaches both perigee, approximately 226,000 miles (363,300 km) from Earth, and apogee, approximately 251,000 miles (405,500 km) from Earth. Because the Moon's orbit fluctuates and varies depending on the positions of the Sun and Earth in their orbits, the exact distances of these closest and farthest points vary, and some supermoons are closer or farther than others. 'Supermoon' is not an official astronomical term, but is commonly used to describe a full moon that is at least 90 percent perigee.

Supermoons occur only three to four times a year and always appear in quick succession. For most of Earth's orbit around the sun, the perigee and the full moon do not overlap.

People all over the world have witnessed stunning supermoons before. However, yesterday's supermoon was particularly special because the moon appeared 14% larger and 30% brighter than a normal full moon. If you missed this, you'd have to wait another 18 years – until 2034 – to see this amazing phenomenon again. Let's admire these beautiful supermoon photos from around the world  below; you certainly won't be disappointed!
