Mac OSX 10.8 vs. Windows 8: Defeated
Windows 8 and Mountain Lion are the latest versions of the computer operating system today. Windows 8 has been completed by Microsoft and shipped to the manufacturer (Release to manufacturer), just waiting on the shelf. Mountain Lion is OS X version released by Apple to users 1 month ago.
Therefore, soon, this promises to be two strong competitors in the operating system market for computers, although Mountain Lion may be underestimated due to the apparent popularity of the Mac. not equal to PC. However, popularity does not tell the operating system's power or performance. Some of PCMag 's following tests will give us a more detailed look at the speed of Windows 8 and Mountain Lion.
Note that the following test is done on Apple laptops, so it can be said that OS X has an advantage. Windows, meanwhile, has to run on many different PC systems from many manufacturers. In the following test, the author installed Windows 8 RTM 64-bit version on the MacBook Pro 13 inch (2012 version, using Core i7 chip 2.9 GHz, 8 GB RAM). And below is the result table:
Boot time and shutdown
System startup time is one of the very important factors for current technology equipment. Users will prefer devices that have faster boot times instead of waiting more time to be able to use the device. This can also be considered as one of the factors that help iPad succeed: iPad launch time is super fast. Almost immediately after pressing the power button, the user can use the device.
The boot time is from when the device is turned on until the computer displays the full home screen. Time to turn off the computer from pressing the Shut Down button until the cooling fan of the machine is quiet. These tests are repeated 5 times by the author, then take the average to produce the results as shown in the picture below. It can be seen that Windows 8 starts much faster than Mountain Lion but the shutdown time of "Mountain Lion " is "super fast".
Rip CDs with iTunes
iTunes is used a lot on both Mac and Windows PCs. Testing Rip CDs with this program on 2 operating systems shows that there is not much difference. Mountain Lion Rip a 60-minute CD to M4A format (256 Kbps quality) takes 3 minutes 42 seconds, 5 seconds faster than Windows 8.
Overall Benchmark with Geekbench
Geekbench 2.3 is a benchmark that can calculate system performance in terms of prime numbers, symmetric encryption (blowfish), compress text .
Geekbench was tested three times in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, then averaged. The results showed that Windows 8 in the 64-bit version gave a very high score of 10068 points, while the Mountain Lion only reached 8706 points. In the 32-bit version, Mountain Lion scores slightly higher than Windows 8 (791 compared to 7549 points for Windows 8).
Benchmark Web
Let the browser engine not affect the results if you experiment with the default browsers on each operating system (IE 8 and Safari of IE), Firefox will be the browser installed on both machines. We will also test the default browser performance of each operating system in a separate test.
Experiment with the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark which was used to test the JavaScript performance of the browser. The results showed Firefox's SunSpider benchmark completion time on Windows 8 and Mountain Lion nearly equal. However, IE 10's JavaScript processing capability in Windows 8 proved to be superior (only 105 milliseconds) compared to Mountain Lion's Safari (156 milliseconds).
Experiment with another JavaScript benchmark, Kraken 1.1 (developed by Mozilla). Mozilla said Kraken 1.1 results based on the actual load of the browser, so the results will be more accurate. The results showed that Firefox's JavaScript performance on Windows 8 was a bit superior. However, when tested with Safari 6 of Mountain Lion and IE10 of Windows 8, Microsoft's browser proved to be much inferior to Safari.
The last browser benchmark is Psychedelic Browsing. This is a utility that helps test the graphics hardware acceleration of web content. Microsoft has invested a lot in this accelerated technology and the sheer victory of both Firefox and IE on Windows 8 is not controversial.
Speed of copying files
A directory containing 20 files with a total capacity of 636 MB was included in the test. We'll see how long it takes for Windows 8 and Mountain Lion to copy it from the USB (Corsair Flash Voyager GT 16 GB capacity model) to the device. You can see the results in the summary above. When using this test to compare the speed of Windows 8 with Windows 7, Windows 8 takes longer than its predecessor.
Microsoft explains this in Windows 8, every time the file is copied, the operating system will check the file to prevent users from being hacked into the system by strange code. Therefore, the copy time is a little longer, but it is more secure for users.
Conclusion
It can be said that to compare 2 systems like Windows 8 and Mountain Lion is quite difficult because each operating system is designed for different systems. However, the above results also give us a full view of the performance of the two most popular computer operating systems today. Windows 8 outperformed Mountain Lion at points including system boot time, Geekbench score (64-bit), and JavaScript performance measured by SunSpider (in IE10).
Mountain Lion proved superior at the time of shutdown. In the JavaScript benchmark lesson with Mozilla Kraken 1.1, Mountain Lion's Safari 6 also beat IE 10 of Windows 8. The faster file copy speed of this operating system is also an advantage for those who need to copy documents. High capacity.
