Key limitations

Quick summary : In Lesson 2, you set up Dispatch and ran your first remote task. Now we need to understand the limits of what Dispatch can do – because knowing the limits is what makes the difference between user satisfaction and frustration.

 

What confuses people about Claude Dispatch is that it gives the impression you have full access to your Mac from your phone. And in some respects, that's true. But in other crucial respects, the answer is no. Understanding the difference will help you avoid sending missions that are sure to fail.

What can Dispatch access?

When you send a task via Dispatch, Claude on your Mac can do everything it can do in a regular Cowork session. Almost.

 

Full access:

• Your entire file system—Documents, Desktop, Downloads, project folders, hidden files, everything. If Claude Cowork can see it, Dispatch can too.
• Your Global Cowork guidelines - All the guidelines, options, and behavioral rules you've set up. They are automatically triggered.
• Cowork's built-in features include document creation, analysis, summarization, code writing, and session conversation tracking.
• File manipulation - Reading, creating, editing, moving, copying, and (with permission) deleting files.

Restricted access:

• Connectors - Some work perfectly through Dispatch, others are unreliable. More details below.
• Long-running operations - Tasks that take several minutes may time out, especially on unstable connections.

No access:

• The Mac's graphical user interface (GUI) – Dispatch – cannot click buttons, open applications, or interact with windows. It operates through the file system and the Cowork connector interface, rather than a visual desktop interface.
• Applications are not connected - If an application does not have a Cowork connector, Dispatch cannot interact with it.
• Anything that requires your physical presence— Touch ID , Face ID on a Mac, pressing a physical button.

 

The reality of connector compatibility.

Cowork has over 38 connectors – Google Drive, Slack, GitHub, Notion, etc. But not all of them work perfectly through Dispatch. The current situation is as follows:

Reliable via Dispatch:

• File system (local files and folders)

The approval notification on your phone includes:

• What does Claude want to do (specific action)?
• Related files or resources
• The "Approve" and "Deny" buttons

If you decline an action, Claude will acknowledge the decline and suggest alternatives. For example, if you decline deleting a file, Claude might suggest renaming the file or moving it to the "to be deleted" folder for manual review later.

Tip : The approval portal works best when you have push notifications enabled and your phone isn't in Do Not Disturb mode. If Claude is waiting for approval and you don't see a notification, the task will hang. Check the troubleshooting section of lesson 2 if notifications aren't working.

Context window and session memory

Dispatch sessions share the same context window as regular Cowork sessions. This means that:

• Claude remembers what you discussed in the current session.
• Previous messages in the conversation provide context for subsequent messages.
• Sessions that are too long can eventually reach the context window limit.

 

One key difference : Dispatch sessions do not retain chat history after disconnection. If the connection is broken and you reconnect, you will start a new session. Any context from the previous session will disappear.

Practical application : If you're working on something complex, don't rely on Dispatch's session memory to last forever. For important results, have Claude save the results to a file on your Mac. The files persist even after the session is no longer active.

Exercise: Create a context map of your Dispatch.

Take 5 minutes to answer these questions about your own setup:

This mapping exercise is not a pointless endeavor. It makes the difference between "Dispatch is great" and "Dispatch is constantly making mistakes and I don't know why." Most of the errors stem from attempting tasks beyond Dispatch's current capabilities.

Key points to remember

• Dispatch can access the entire file system and all Global Cowork instructions—but cannot access the graphical user interface (GUI) or unconnected applications on your Mac.
• Not all of the more than 38 connectors are fully compatible with Dispatch - please check before using them.
• Global Cowork instructions are automatically forwarded, making well-configured setups significantly more effective.
• The approval portal protects you from harmful actions - turn on push notifications.
• Session memory is not saved after disconnection - save important results to a file.
• Create your own context map (files, connectors, instructions) to understand what Dispatch can specifically do for you.

  Why aren't all Cowork connectors fully compatible with Dispatch?

  • A. The connectors are outdated.
