Google Cloud Outage, Major Platforms Affected
In the early morning of June 13 (Vietnam time), the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) cloud service suddenly encountered a prolonged problem, causing a series of popular applications and websites such as OpenAI, Discord, Snapchat, Shopify. to become unstable or inaccessible.
'Some services on the Google Cloud platform are currently experiencing issues. Our engineering team is on scene and working to resolve the issue,' Google said in an official update.
The incident began at 10:51 a.m. Pacific Time on June 12, or around 1 a.m. on June 13 in Vietnam. According to records, at least 13 different cloud services in many regions such as the US, Europe and Asia were affected. Famous names using Google Cloud infrastructure such as livestreaming platform Twitch (owned by Amazon), AI Weights and Biases tool from CoreWeave, chat application Discord, social network Snapchat, GitHub from Microsoft, e-commerce system Shopify or content delivery network Cloudflare all fell into a state of unstable operation.
Several OpenAI services , including familiar AI tools like ChatGPT , were also affected. According to an announcement from OpenAI, the bug involved single sign-on and other forms of login, making it difficult for users to access. They said the engineering team was actively working on a solution.
Cloudflare , a provider of web security and optimization solutions, also shared: 'We have recorded some problems, although they are not continuous. Currently, the technical team is checking to assess the specific impact on each service.'
On the Downdetector website – which monitors the operational status of online services – the number of incident reports related to Google Cloud reached nearly 15,000 at one point, before gradually cooling down. In addition, the keyword 'Firebase' – a platform that supports building web and mobile applications developed by Google – was also suddenly searched a lot, showing the level of interest and impact of this incident.
According to CNBC, the incident has made many businesses feel concerned about their increasing dependence on a single party's cloud infrastructure. This incident also puts Google in a difficult position as it is in a race to catch up with two industry giants, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure. The cloud computing segment - currently led by Mr. Thomas Kurian - has been one of Google's fastest growing areas in recent years, especially thanks to the explosive demand for AI solutions and smart applications.
