Mystery about coffins moving on Barbados island
Barbados is located in the eastern part of the Caribbean Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, covering an area of approximately 430 km2. The name Barbados is derived from the Portuguese language and is thought to refer to the fig trees scattered across the island. This tropical island has a pleasant landscape and remains a tourist attraction.
The island was originally inhabited by indigenous people and Spanish-speaking people from the 15th to 16th centuries. Later in 1625, the British came to the island and established a colony here. Barbados's unique climate is suitable for growing sugarcane, so the sugar industry has grown on this small island.
This was followed by an increase in slave trade sales due to labor demand. For a time, sugarcane plantations grew on the island like mushrooms after rain. By 1700, there were about 15,000 whites and 50,000 blacks on the island.
There is a cemetery in Christchurch parish on Austin Bay, Barbados. One of the graves was built around 1724 and was originally owned by a man named James Elliott.
The tomb is quite elegant, it is made of coral and concrete, the door of the tomb is sealed with marble. A stairway leads to the burial chamber, about 3.7 meters long and about 2 meters wide, with a dome.
But the owner of the grave did not have time to use it but had to sell it to a local plantation owner named Thomas Chase, and he used it as a family grave.
In 1807, Thomasina Goddard died. She was placed in a wooden coffin and became the first "resident" at this grave. Shortly thereafter, the daughter of Thomas Chase, Mary Ann Maria Chase, just two years old, unfortunately died and was buried there, in 1812, her sister - Dorcas Chase also followed her sister to become Next inhabitants of the tomb. She died of anorexia, but some thought she could not stand the pressure from her father to commit suicide.
Everything about the tomb seems to be going on normally and shortly after, Thomas Chase died because of his weak price, he was buried in the tomb like his family members. But when people opened the tomb to put his coffin in, they were stunned by a strange phenomenon.
The coffins in the tomb were all repositioned in an unusual way, as if some mysterious force had moved them from their original position.
The first suspect was a black man responsible for protecting the cemetery, but he denied and denied any allegations. Although the event made people feel embarrassed but the funeral was still going on, the coffin containing Thomas Chase was still placed in the tomb and it was once again sealed.
In September 1816, young Samuel Brewster Ames of Thomas Chase family, just 11 months old was also unlucky to die and was sent to be a resident of the tomb. At this point, the coffin in the tomb was again swapped, and Thomas Chase's coffin was leaning against the wall.
More than a month later, another member of his family died, when the burial chamber door reopened, as expected, another mess in it, and Mrs. Goddard's wooden coffin. broke and everyone had to tie the coffin so it leaned against the wall.
By this time, the reputation of a "haunted" tomb in Christchurch had spread, and even Barbados Governor Lord Camber had heard of it.
So when Thomasina Clark died and was buried in the Chase family tomb in 1819, he brought a group of government officials there.
Unsurprisingly, the coffin in the burial room changed position again. After carefully examining the burial chamber, they did not find anything like a passage to the outside world.
Lord Comber
And to make sure the position of the coffin was changed not by human action, Lord Comber ordered the sprinkling of fine sand on the floor of the burial room, and once again the marble slabs covered the throne. The tomb was again plastered and sealed once more.
A year later, on April 18, 1820, Lord Comber and his subordinates as well as some locals came to the church cemetery again.
They decided to open the tomb again to monitor changes in the burial room. But people soon discovered that Thomas Chase's giant lead coffin blocked the entrance to the tomb, and the other coffins that were neatly placed now changed positions and were placed diagonally, some of which were erect against the wall while no trace is left on the sand showing that this change is due to human hands changing.
Unable to understand what happened, everyone hurriedly moved all the coffins inside the tomb to another place, and the Chase family tomb became an empty tomb.
The story of moving coffins on Barbados is one of the most famous "unsolved mysteries". For the past 300 years, people have been trying to find solutions around the mystery of the Chase family's tomb in Barbados, but there's still no logical answer.
