Read the final extension, not just the icon
Microsoft's common-extension reference groups formats such as documents, images, audio, video, compressed archives and executable files. The extension provides a clue about structure and intended software, but it does not guarantee that a file is safe or correctly named.
When extensions are hidden, report.pdf.exe may appear as report.pdf and use a familiar-looking icon. The final extension is .exe, meaning Windows treats it as an executable program. This is why visible extensions are a basic safety and troubleshooting setting.
Turn on file-name extensions
Open File Explorer. In Windows 11, choose View > Show > File name extensions. In many Windows 10 layouts, open the View tab and select File name extensions. Once enabled, the setting applies broadly to Explorer views.
Do not edit extensions casually. Renaming notes.txt to notes.pdf does not convert the contents into a PDF; it only changes the label Windows uses to decide which app should try to open it. Use the application's Save As or Export command for a real format conversion.

That does not make every macro file malicious, but it means you should know why the macro is needed and trust the source before enabling content. A file downloaded unexpectedly should be treated more cautiously than a file exported by an application you just used.
