Intel launches its first DG1 discrete graphics processor
Intel just launched its first discrete GPU graphics processor, codenamed DG1 at the ongoing CES 2020. This was Intel's first shot when it decided to jump into the GPU game, becoming a competitor to two other VGA giants, Nvidia and AMD.
Currently, Intel only demonstrated a demo playing Destiny 2 directly on the DG1 GPU, but did not disclose many details about this discrete graphics processor. DG1 is built on the LP Car architecture, similar to the integrated GPUs on the upcoming 10nm Tiger Lake chip.
There is an opinion that maybe DG1 GPU is simply a separate version of the integrated GPU on Tiger Lake chip. However, Intel has revealed that the DG1 GPU has double the performance of previous generations.
Previously, Intel had a lot of difficulties because it did not have its own discrete graphics processor. Even to create a generation of Core i5 chips combined with AMD's GPU, it had to accept cooperation with AMD in 2018.
Currently, the time of launching devices equipped with DG1 discrete GPU has not been disclosed. However, later this year devices with 10nm Tiger Lake chips will hit the market.
