Microsoft is making it harder than ever to install Windows 11 without a Microsoft account or internet connection. The familiar bypass command is blocked, forcing users to complete setup with an online account — causing an uproar in the Windows community.
In the 'smoldering war' between users and Microsoft, it seems that the software giant is still constantly looking for ways to force users to comply with the constraints it sets. One of the popular tricks has long been to bypass the requirement to log in to a Microsoft account and connect to the Internet when installing Windows 11, especially for those who prefer to use a local account to have better control over their system.
But Microsoft is not happy with that!
Block the famous 'fence-breaking' order
Previously, many users used the oobebypassnro command to bypass the online account login step during the initial setup process. However, in the latest test build of Windows 11, Microsoft has completely removed this method and tightened the installation process even more.
Previously, Windows 10 made it easy to choose a local account — there was even a dedicated button. But in Windows 11, Microsoft says that using a local account leaves your computer 'not fully configured for use'.
In its latest note, the company said:
'We are removing mechanisms that allow local account creation during the out-of-box experience (OOBE) of Windows. These mechanisms were often used to bypass Microsoft account setup, but could also cause users to miss some important configuration steps. Users need to complete the OOBE process with an internet connection and a Microsoft account to ensure the device is set up properly.'
Many people still prefer to install Windows 11 offline for three main reasons:
- Avoid tons of full-screen ads for Game Pass, Microsoft 365, Phone Link, and other services.
- Don't be forced to back up OneDrive or turn on BitLocker automatically — features that should be user-selectable.
- Install the driver yourself as you want , avoid unnecessary intervention from Windows Update.
These options, they say, have no impact on system performance or stability. Microsoft's continued disregard for user choice is clearly disappointing. However, tech enthusiasts are always inventive — and it's likely that new 'tricks' will soon emerge that allow you to install Windows 11 offline without a Microsoft account.
The cat-and-mouse game between Microsoft and the tech community on this issue is expected to continue, reflecting the tension between the company's need for security and the end-user's desire for freedom.
