Nvidia hopes to reshape the visual landscape of gaming by announcing the all-new DLSS 5, an artificial intelligence model that the company promises will deliver photographic realism with current gaming hardware. Nvidia calls it "the most significant breakthrough in computer graphics since the launch of real-time Ray Tracing technology in 2018." The company also says this new technology will allow game developers to achieve a level of photographic realism in computer graphics previously only achievable in Hollywood visual effects.
What is DLSS 5?
DLSS was originally an artificial intelligence technology used to improve performance through resolution upscaling and frame generation. DLSS 5 is something entirely different. It's a model that can be integrated into game scenes to create realistic images, handling complex elements like surface scattering, subtle fabric sheen, and light-material interactions in hair, while still preserving the structure and semantics of the original scene.
DLSS 5 works by taking the game's color and motion vectors for each frame as input, then using data from AI video models and integrating it with accurate real-time lighting and other enhancements to create stunning visual results. Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, believes DLSS 5 will deliver a significant leap forward in visual realism.

DLSS 5 feels like an AI video creator.
DLSS 5 isn't an AI video generator; it simply works on the game engine and enhances the visuals. But from what Nvidia has shared, the results feel more like what you'd expect from an AI video generator. The demo video is exciting and certainly reinforces Nvidia's confidence in the technology, but from a few frames of different games shown, the results seem similar to what many on the internet call "low-quality AI products."
AI video generators have received a lot of negative feedback, and since DLSS 5 learns from these very models, the results feel similarly. Undoubtedly, DLSS 5 has the potential to be a groundbreaking technology, but it can't shake the feeling that it's taking away what makes a video game.
Nvidia says developers will be able to control the level of enhancement that DLSS 5 applies, allowing them to maintain the aesthetics of the game and stay true to their artistic vision.
Launching in the fall of 2026 across more than 15 AAA titles and expected to work with current RTX GPUs.
Game publishers such as Bethesda, Capcom, and Vantage Studio have expressed excitement about this technology in their upcoming titles. Titles confirmed to support DLSS 5 include AION 2, Assassin's Creed: Shadows, Delta Force, Hogwarts Legacy, Phantom Blade Zero, Resident Evil Requiem, Sea of Remnants, Starfield, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Where Winds Meet, etc.
Nvidia has also confirmed that DLSS 5 will not require any new hardware and will work on existing GPUs, including the RTX 50 series, and research is ongoing to further optimize the technology. However, there is no exact release date for the technology yet, but Nvidia has indicated a launch in the fall of 2026, so the wait shouldn't be too long.
