Whether you collect Pokémon in Pokémon Champions by recruiting them from Roster Ranch or transferring them from a Pokémon Home, they won't truly be ready for battle until they've been trained. Training involves setting up the Pokémon's moves, stats, abilities, and personality.

Even if you think this isn't necessary since you've already transferred your Pokémon from Pokémon Home, it's still worthwhile opening the training menu to double-check all the information. Not all stats transfer perfectly, and some moves have slightly different effects in Pokémon Champions, which might make you want to change them.

Stats in Pokemon Champions

When you open the training menu, the first thing you'll see is the Pokémon's stats. These are the core stats, just like in every other Pokémon game, and they include:

  • HP — The amount of health your Pokémon can withstand before being defeated.
  • Attack — The physical attack damage dealt by a Pokémon.
  • Defense — A Pokémon's ability to defend itself against physical attacks.
  • Special Attack — The Pokémon's special attack damage.
  • Special Defense — A Pokémon's ability to defend itself against special attacks.
  • Speed — The speed of a Pokémon. This determines who attacks first in battle.

Typically, in other Pokémon games, these stats are affected by IVs and EVs. IVs, or individual values, are the Pokémon's genetic attributes. They are a random value on a scale from 0 to 31 for each stat and can usually only be changed by Hyper Training with Bottle Caps, but only in some Pokémon games.

These stats are crucial because they form the foundation for Pokémon's stats. However, Pokémon Champions doesn't seem to recognize IVs or have a way to view them, perhaps because you don't actually catch Pokémon in this game.

There's no reason to change IVs as that would only create an imbalance in battle, especially if you hire a Pokémon from Roster Ranch with terrible IVs. So, it seems like every Pokémon in Pokémon Champions has perfect IVs by default.

This means all you need to worry about is EV. EV, or Effort Values, is where you can adjust your Pokémon's stats. Think of this as the actual training process for your Pokémon. In Pokémon Champions, you'll have 66 EV points to allocate to your Pokémon's stats as you wish.

Each stat can only receive a maximum of 32 points, so you can't put all 66 points into a single stat. How you allocate your points is entirely up to you, but the general rule is to maximize your EV points in Attack or Special Attack, depending on the stat your Pokémon is using.

For the remaining 34 points, the advice depends on the Pokémon. Most players will put 32 points into Speed and the remaining two into HP, but that's not always the best option. Some Pokémon might perform better as support or have moves focused on defense, so in that case, you might benefit more from putting 32 points into Defense or Special Defense.

In short, there's no absolute right or wrong way, but you should consider the moves Pokémon use and their function in your team when deciding how to allocate points.

If you use your Pokémon primarily for support rather than damage dealing, you might not need to increase damage and could instead use that point for defense. Analyze this on a case-by-case basis.

Moves in Pokemon Champions

Moves are a core element in battles. Each Pokémon has four moves, some of which can deal damage and some can be non-damaging. Giving specific advice is quite difficult because each Pokémon has its own unique set of moves, and what works for one Pokémon may not work for another, even if both can learn that move.

However, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, prioritize STAB damage. STAB, or Same Type Attack Bonus, is an additional boost that Pokémon receive when using moves that are appropriate for their type. For example, a Grass-type Pokémon will receive STAB when using a Grass-type attack, but not when using a Water-type attack.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't use other moves, as being able to cover a wide range of moves is also important; it's just that your main attack move should be suited to the Pokémon's type.

Additionally, you should consider equipping your Pokémon with a few non-offensive moves and status-dealing moves. The ability to inflict status effects on opponents who have an advantage can help you win in difficult situations.

The best thing to do in Pokémon Champions is to carefully examine your Pokémon's moves and consider how you plan to use them in your team. If something doesn't work, you can always go back and change it later.

Adjusting stats in Pokemon Champions

The term "Nature" refers to the personality traits in Pokémon Champions. Their functionality remains the same; only the name is different. However, it appears that some personalities are missing, but that's because only one of the neutral personalities is included.

Essentially, this involves increasing or decreasing two of the six core stats. You can choose any option, but typically you'll want to increase either Attack or Special Attack and decrease the remaining stat. So, if your Pokémon is Special Attack, you'll want to increase Special Attack and decrease Attack.

Of course, there are exceptions, as with everything in Pokémon, because there are situations where you'll benefit more from increasing speed or defense. It depends on other factors affecting a Pokémon's stats and how you intend to use them.

In the mainstream Pokémon games, this is done using mints, but in Pokémon Champions, you'll have to pay a small VP fee each time you change a Pokémon's stats.
