1. Origin of Father's Day

But the earliest known celebration of Father's Day took place in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908. The event was organized by Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to honor the life of her father who had died a few months earlier in the Monongah Mining Disaster in Monongah, West Virginia, on December 6, 1907. Perhaps influenced by the first Mother's Day celebration that year, Clayton chose the Sunday closest to her recently deceased father's birthday.

However, the event was overshadowed by other events in the city. The state of West Virginia did not officially recognize the holiday, and it was not celebrated again. Much of the credit for Father's Day's eventual creation goes to Spokane native Sonora Dodd, who celebrated Father's Day independently two years later. Her event was also influenced by Mother's Day.

One day in 1909, while listening to a sermon on Mother's Day, Sonora thought of a day to honor fathers. Sonora was the oldest of six children. Her mother died during childbirth, so her father, William Jackson Smart, raised six children by himself. Sonora loved and respected her father because she understood his hardships. In her eyes, her father was a symbol of sacrifice, forgiveness, and tolerance. Therefore, she wanted a special day to honor her father. Sonora chose June 19 as "Father's Day" because that day was her father's birthday.

Then, in 1966, US President Lyndon Johnson officially decided to designate the third Sunday in June of each year as Father's Day across the United States. Father's Day has been celebrated annually since US President Richard Nixon signed a law recognizing Father's Day as a permanent official holiday in 1972.
