Mars , also known as Mars , is the fourth planet from the Sun in the Solar System. It is often referred to as the " Red Planet ", because its surface has a lot of iron oxide that makes the surface appear with a characteristic red color. Mars is a rocky planet with a thin atmosphere, features on the surface that resemble both craters on the Moon and volcanoes, valleys, deserts and ice caps on the Earth.

We humans have sent dozens of probes and satellites to the Red Planet - Mars for decades.
These spacecraft signaled impressive photos, sci-fi movies like " The Martian ", even suggested Elon Musk the idea of settling down on the Red Planet.
But does each of us know how much truth about " neighbor " is right next to planet Earth?
Although people have not set foot in this place, but there are still many mysterious things to be answered, scientists have found a lot of interesting things about Mars.
From what looks like the surface of the Earth, the most impressive places to the presence of an ancient ocean ( and tsunami ), keep exploring the 12 interesting facts about Mars that may be you. Don't know below!
Surface area

The surface area of Mars is only slightly smaller than the total land area on Earth - but that's not to mention 71% of the Earth's area is covered in water.

Temperature

Among the planets in the solar system, the seasons on Mars are roughly the same as those on Earth, because they are about the same as the tilt of the axis of rotation on the two planets. Season lengths on Mars are about twice that of the Earth, because the distance from Mars to the greater Sun leads to a year on the Red Planet by about two years on Earth . Mars temperature varies from very low temperatures of -87 ° C during winter periods in the poles to -5 ° C in the summer. The average temperature on the surface of Mars is - 81 ° F, lower than the average temperature on Earth at 138 ° C.
Ozone

The Martian atmosphere contains 95% carbon dioxide, 3% nitrogen, 1.6% argon and contains traces of oxygen and steam. The Red planet's atmosphere is quite dusty, containing dust particles about 1.5 µm in diameter, making the Mars sky a golden-brown color when standing from its surface.
The Martian atmosphere is 61 times thinner than Earth's atmosphere, and it covers almost entirely carbon dioxide, which accounts for only 0.04% of the Earth's atmosphere.
Canyon

Mars has Mount Olympus Mons , the highest mountain in the Solar System and Valles Marineris , the deepest and widest gorge in the Solar System, five times the deepest of the planet. Not only crossing the deepest gorge of the Grand Canyon in the US, Valles Marineris is also considered to be the deepest of the Solar System, including the Earth. The Borealis flat basin on the northern hemisphere covers up to 40% of the Red Planet's surface area and may be a giant impact hole in the past.
Ancient ocean

Red Planet - Mars once had an ocean, but having more oceans provided only 1.5% more water on Earth.
Oasis

If aliens exist on Mars, they may have lived in oasis-like lakes. These lakes may be places of life, as well as on Earth.

The Martian oceans also have tsunamis like Earth. The highest tsunami can reach a height of 400 ft ~ 122 meters, only slightly lower than the London Eye - London Eye or the Millennium Cycle.
Ice caps

The planet Earth and Mars also have ice caps at the poles. The ice cap is north of 2 miles deep and is slightly larger than Texas. ( Texas is one of the states in the center of the southwestern United States ).
Volcano

Olympus Mons ( Latin by Mount Olympus ) is a large volcano on Mars. This mountain is 25km high, three times the height of Everest and the highest mountain in the solar system. Olympus Mons is twice as tall as Earth's largest volcano, Mauna Loa in Hawaii.

The missions to Mars have become much rarer - after 23 launches in the 1960-70 period , we have only conducted 10 launches in the new millennium ( so far ).
